Default Fiesta 1.25 - cooling problem

Junior came in and said that the temp gauge on his 02 Fiesta kept going up, the cooling fan would cut in and out, and the heater would blow hot then cool.

Went out to the car and everything he said is true, so got a torch and opened the bonnet and found there's very little coolant in the bottle even though we only did the underbonnet checks when we topped up the screenwash last Wednesday.

The lost coolant is all over the top of the gearbox, but the trouble is, I can't see a leak and there's little or no space to feel the hoses there.

Tried topping up the header tank and running the car to temp to see where the coolant comes out but although the fan cuts in, I can't spot the leak. Any clues or tips on finding it please....?

try looking up towards the bulk head where the two hoses go in to the heater control valve, just to discount it really, but i think if i remember thats above the gear box.
These sometimes get stuck in the closed position and can cause problems.

Check the heater control valve (on bulkhead basically above pedals) - may be leaking from there and running along to the box. That would explain it blowing hot and cold...

Think its a common problem on these. If it is the heater control valve thats the problem you can bypass it and join the two hoses together to get it back on the road until you can replace the valve.
