I can't stand selling cars!!!!!!!!!!!
Guy that is buying my car is starting to fuck me right off now!!
It has gone like this:
- Left £300 deposit, car taken off sale and he asked to collect first weekend of February, paying the balance on collection. I agreed.
- Been in reasonable contact since then, he is finding it hard to get cheap flights up, decides to get the car collected and flatbedded down to him in London.
- Told him that I'd need the balance in full before the car/paperwork left my driveway. Told that was fine and he'd pay the balance in cash at his local branch of my bank.
- He asked for a scan of my licence and photo id to prove who I was.. so, thinking that fair enough its a lot of cash to put into a random account, I scanned in the paper part of driving licence, gym card with photo and a letter from my bank... all with my name, address and bank details (not gym card obviously) on them, although I did remove/cover the important document numbers and licence number etc to protect myself. Passport is expired and hence punted a while back and I lost my photocard bit of licence recently, so gym card is only photographic thing I've got at the moment.
- Been told the stuff I sent isn't enough to prove who I am?!? ...and that he wants to send the balance minus £500 just now because his brother said so, and is giving me his word that I'll get the £500 once the car arrives at his home.
Cheers,
Grant

I would not entertain that grant, not worth the hassle, ive sold a few cars over the years luckily quite easily.
tell him its noot worth the hassle, you will get your sale in due time mate. not at all worth the risk, you should not be going to much effort to sell or going out of your way.

Tell him to wave goodbye to his deposit if you do not recieve the money within the next 7 days. The ball is in his court then.

Give him the choice, either pay the remaining and collect the car, or tell him you will be keeping his deposit for the hassle and re-sell it on.
He sounds like a messer

Surely if he has paid the deposit..that is basing that he is buying the car as originally discussed...you took your car off for sale for him because he gave you the deposit you have met your side of the bargain he has broken the agreement and is now trying to knock you for another £500...at the end of the day you dont part with the car til full payment is made...give him one more chance to pay for the car if he doesn't want it thats then his problem not yours!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
Put it back on sale and keep the deposit, its only as much hassle as you allow it to be, youve just got yourself £300 for doing not alot, bonus.

Too many scammers out there mate just tell him straight if the money isnt paid in full you will relist it keeping his deposit. Spin him a line someone offered you £600 less for the car but with the £300 he gave you your losing only £300 on the sale with no extra hastle

Told him that the stuff I sent would be enough to prove to the Police who I was, so should be enough to put his brothers mind at ease about me being who I said I was.
Also said that I'm not prepared to take the risk because he can't manage to collect the car when he said he would and this is the drawback of him choosing to have the car trailered down rather than pick up himself in person.
If he bottles this, then I'll be re-listing the car for sale on the various different places it was before and keeping hold of his deposit too.
lol @ making a living off deposits.. I made a grand off the original buyer for my old Impreza STi, although that dragged on for a few months and he genuinely couldn't complete the sale.

Grant

My advice is to tell him if he doesn't pay by the end of the week, you will keep the deposit and relist the car, you'll soon weed out the timewaster from the genuine buyer.
Total messer by the sounds of it, and do you need the hassle?
I think traders deserve a medal, the amount of timewasting cnuts is unreal, i'd end up "sticking the heed" into a potential customer if i did that for a full time occupation, just sold the white saph and had about 10 million folk interested, and about 20 total timewasting nobs. Sold it to a genuine guy in the end so it's all good, free garage space and money in the bank.

I think he's either one, finding it hard to get the full cash (minus £500, probably thought he had enough untill he realised the price of travel) or hes finding it hard to come up to collect.
Regardless, It doesn't leave your drive until hes paid in full! Tell him you have given him more than enough time, you have 7 days until you loose the deposit and the car goes on sale again.
Pain in the ass though!

Tell him not to put the money in your account and you want cash on collection and payment in full, iv had it before where they have given the money to the company collecting the vehicle so you get your cash and they make a note of any marks etc on the car.
if he can't collect with cash it's his problem and not yours.
Ps i hate selling cars as 90% of buyers are knobs.

Problem also is that deposits on the sale of any vehicle are refundable.
I like to write on any receipt that the money left is not a deposit against the vehicle but a payment to remove the vehicle from sale for a period of 14 days.
Definately would not want to do it for a living.

What? Why?
The buyer comes to your house, with 100% payment. Only then is the car removed from sale, and sold to the new owner. Taking a small deposit, removing the car from sale, waiting for the new owner to collect the car etc etc only encourages people to fuck you about.

I'd agree with not leaving deposits and shit either. Too much leeway to get fucked around and things get complicated. What I normally do, go see the car, if I like it tell the seller in no uncertain terms I'll take it. Arrange a date, arrive with agreed amount, drive off with car, job done, both parties happy.

Mate ive been selling cars 9 years... last 3 for myself. A deposit is a sign of commitment. If you dont take them when they first come out you'll never see them again. At least then if they choose to mess you about or act like grants guy has you have some sort of hold over them and if they do back out you have some compensation.
One thing though i never remove a car from sale unless they have paid a sizeable % of the full price.

Ok, he said that he'd put the money into the account today in two stages... the large lump and then the £500 to complete the balance, then show the big receipt to his brother to keep him happy.
(So I assume from what he's said, that his brother is lending him the money for the car?!)
He's paid in the large lump, confirmed by checking my account online, and told me that he'd pay in the £500 final amount in the next 20 minutes... that was at 3.30pm.
Text him to ask why it hadn't gone in and this was the reply:
"Hi mate, i didn't get to the damn bank 2nd time in time. Im going to go home and do it online. Trust me mate i will send it to u 1 million percent"
So as it stands, I've got many, many thousands of pounds of his money (paid in cash, so no account number/sort to return it to) and he's got zero chance of getting the car until I get the full amount... seems a pointless exercise to me.
Cheers,
Grant

Edit, never saw your last reply.

There are some circumstances where it is not as simple as that but in general, as long as it is made clear it is a non-refundable deposit, there isn't a problem.
