Today i got in my car and its making a grinding/banging noise when i turn the wheel and worse going over bumps. My dad thinks its the front left spring, does anyone have any idea how much these are to buy and get fitted? Thanks

Check the drop links for the anti roll bar first, broken springs don't normally cause a noise.
I don't know about your age mondy, but my dads mk1 were around Ł80 a set pattern for decent ones.

Im not very good at fixing cars, we figured its the spring though because we had someone turn the wheel while we looked underneath and it the noise seems to be coming from the spring when it moves. I will ask the garage to check the anti roll bar first though. Thank you.

It is the drop links that wear and then make a hell of a racket over bumper roads, the main prob with the springs is the top bearings get sticky and then they twang all of a sudden as the spring pressure overcomes the stiffness of the bearing and it spring back to where it should be, but this is distinctly a twanging noise.

Cheers guys. I took it to the garage the other day and they put a new coil spring on and a new top bearing because that had split too. Ł141 inc vat which i thought was quite reasonable?

Yeah ive heard people say that but ive also been told that it isnt necessary to have them both changed. I just took it in the garage and let them deal with it and they just did the broken one. I also had a look online and noticed how much these springs seem to go on them, and on jags since they started using the same springs!
