i had mine moved and it was free, bt that was because it was not secured properly in the first place and was too close to the incoming electrical supply and fusebox.

i didn't wander about, i just sat still and called british gas

To move the gas meter you are looking around Ł1000 from the gas board,

Then it is extra to have it reconnected as the pipework feeding the house will also need moving which the gas board can do.....but it would probably be cheaper to get a plumber in to reconnect the house.

Its not cheap

Sorry to hijack, but do you reckon they'll still have our pants down for moving ours from inside our garage to a box outside? It would be exactly where the main enters the garage, so very little moving actually. I'd probably supply and fit the ground level box too??

Would they fit the meter then leave me to have the house connected to the other side of it? Obviously only if there was a cost benefit to it for me.

think is, you need to be approved to fiddle with this sort of thing or in the case of you blowing your house up, you'll be liable

ask someone who's gas safe registered (rod reminded us that corgi is o longer the standard you need to apply for gas stuff) to do it for you and provide the ceftification to cover your arse

They don't.

If it's Yellow MDPE they squash it with a clamp in the ground,.
If it's still steel they do it live, but will probably want to change the steel anyway.

It's quite likely to be steel above ground, mdpe below
If it's steel below ground it needs changing, you may be able to do a cheap deal.

i wast hinking about this my gas meter is under the stairs right at the smallest point right at the back so every time they want to check it we have to turn everything out however the meters got to be atleast 15 years old maybe even 20 and im building a new extension this year with a utility so i want the box moving 5m along the ground enough room to walk under the floor + a trap door so no obstruction and 2m up the wall im thinking i could get this done quite cheaply as the meter should be due for a change?

If its a steel or iron main it will be changed.

BUT...

Its on a list of what was put in the ground first gets done first.

When they change it to MDPE they will move the meter for free for you if you ask, if you dont they wont- its part of the service.

I worked for a Company on the west midlands Gas Alliance for a while and know this is the case.

I need mine moving too - but I think I am just going to cut a hole in the side of the house as it will cost me Ł100 to do that.

if its steel tell them you smell gas they will be out fast and get them ta move it at same time give the bloke a bung, works wonders. When we had gas connected at our house we were suposed to dig drive up but gave the guy a back hander and he stuck the mole under drive as he had to do road
