Just had the call i didnt want, The head manager phoned me to let me know that glaxosmilthkline are closing tonbridge site this year! that means emcor who i work for doing the serving on the plant will have no work so im redundant this year some time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyone know of any mechical engineering jobs in the kent area let me know,

i used to work for emcor on the GSK contract in hammersmith

i knew they were gonna close down that site last year.

Its shit craic, the government are telling everyone that the recession is over and how everything is going to be fine but everyone i talk to is either out of work or on there notice, the thing is these are all skilled tradesmen so should find it easy to get jobs not be getting laid off.

Out of recession my arse, i think its going to get worse before it gets better unfortunatly.

well im in work now and just spoke to the gsk bosses and it is planed the site will shut at the end of the year so may be here till then, but in the mean time just keep looking for work.

My thoughts exactly sadly!!

I dont think its being out of the recession thats the big issue, its more a fact that "post recovery" the economy just isnt going to recover to anywhere near its previous levels.

Think how much industry weve lost this recession!! sure those industrys will pick up again, just in ANOTHER country!! Weve been undercut and beaten on price in so many industries the last 10 years. We think weve got a unemployed workforce hungry for work, think again!! Far east has 10 times the workforce who will work for a tenth the wage and nowadays provide just as good a product. We cant compete with that.

I reckon give it 2 or 3 years the economy will steady out a bit but at a lower "normal" level than what weve been used to last 20 years. Regardless of national debt etc, we just arent as prosperous a country as we were.

I cant believe that, They have only just finished building works at the site (I live in Harlow, used to work at the Ware site)

However, I do believe the Ware site will shut down this year. They had a new director about 12 months ago who took over, he's the same chap that ran the Cedra site and I believe that he was brought in to close the site !

They have had around 1600 redundancies in the past 2 years an are currently running with about 700 staff.

They made me redundant in april 09 as they divided my job between stevenage and ware.

I used to be the GXP administrator there but that wanker Chris Pilkinton (you might know his name) let me go.

Our company manufactures a lot of equipment that's on that site, as well as providing engineers. I used to supply millions worth of kit to GSK. Pharma has been hit really badly though, that and chemical.

Basically they're moving R&D over to China - everything's cheaper and it gives them inroads into the chinese market (which is big, obviously) for their drugs...
