Hi folks,

I'm currently working on a Land Rover project, using an Audi V8 engine, and i'm trying to work out a reliable solution for the clutch.

As it stands i was going to use the stock audi flywheel and pressure plate, with a landrover TDi friction plate inside, however i've been informed that when people install a common diesel upgrade motor (International 2.8TGV) the standard friction plate tends to disintegrate. My V8 is producing around 30lb/ft more than the TGV, so i'm looking at alternatives.

Someone has suggested that a "Sierra Cosworth 4x4" clutch plate will fit the splines on the land rover transmission, and will presumably handle the 300lbft just fine, however i dont particularly want to spend £££ on a new clutch to find it doesnt fit at all.

So what i'd like to know is if there is any differences between the clutches fitted to the various sierra models, ie MT75 / 4x4 / T5 and if anyone perhaps happens to have an old/worn/dead cossie clutch laying around that i could have/borrow to check the splines against the input shaft on the R380.

The friction plate thickness will also need to be compatible with whatever clutch setup you opt for. They are often very similar in thickness, but definately not all the same.

Ive a complete new 4x4 AP 6 paddle kit here if interested.

Ok mate, I assume youve looked at the catalogue already, but here goes....

Defender 2.5 Tdi 250/300 came with a 240mm plate with a 25.4mm bore and 23 splines. The spline pattern was shared by the 3.5 V8 and the basic 2.5 but for some reason the TD5 used a 26.1mmbore and the same 23 splines. Various plate diameters were used, 241mm on the 2.5 and 267mm on the V8.

Ford sierra cosworth 10/87 - 10/90 (sapphire) had a 240mm plate, 26mm bore and 23 splines 10/89 - 03/93 was the same

The sierra 2.3v6 and 2.8v6 (xr4i and 4x4) (1982-93) both had a 240 mm plate with a 25.4mm bore and 23 splines so Id guess this is the one you need. The same plate is fitted to anything with an MT75x box by the looks of things, orions, mondeos etc.

Ye thats what the catalog says, but then i think its wrong. The TDi clutch isnt 241mm for example, its 235mm, or 242mm for the HD version

I've measured my input shaft and its 24.9mm OD, not 25.4...

The 2.0 seirras would have run an MT75 box, just like the cossie 4x4, but the catalog suggests they have different splines...

Firstlines catalog suggests the Ford spline is 26.3mm OD, but then it says landrover uses 26.6mm...

Hence looking for a cossie centre to try on my gearbox!

What i'd like to know is if anyone has any knowledge of whether the cossie friction plates ARE actually different to the other MT75 boxes, and whether the 2WD plate differs to the 4x4 one?

go buy one from maccess and just keep returning it till you get one that fits :P

Burton Power list a AP friction plate for example, which is says fits Cossie, V6 Taunus, Cologne and Essex, which i'm pretty sure covers every box ford ever fitted and would suggest they're all the same...

The clutch KITS have different part numbers, but that might simply be because the different transmissions use different release bearings...

yeah, the kit part number is meaningless, although you should be bale to see if the relaease bearing is different as theyre often listed seperately.

Interesting they list one plate for everything, that covers the MT75, type 9 and T5 afaik?

As per my reply on VauxSport mate, I have a 2wd new clutch and im sure STT will have a landrover box somewhere that we can try it on for you.
