Iphones - Does the novelty wear off?
Got my contract renewel up next week, and turned down an iphone last year because I thought I would break it workign on cars so much.
This year I dont think I will! I have a few friends with them and had a little play and impressed by their capabilites and apps., but cant help wondering if I got one wheather I'd grow bored of it as I dont really like the texting interface so tempted to go a Nokia touch screen?
Had a couple of mates admit they've gone off theirs a bit, anyone here tend to agree? Or persuade me otherwise?
Is it worth waiting for the new one in July?
Cheers

It needs buttons, screen, mic and speaker.
TBH, the interface on traditional phones is hard to beat. Hit buttons, make a call etc.
I now have an HTC Hero, and there are apps etc for it too. But aside from google maps and email, I cant see what else I would ever need it to do. For that its fine. For phone calls and texting, I can safely say touchscreens are complete wank. I havent used an iphone, but realy dont see how it could be any better, as the "buttons" will still lack the accessibility and feel of proper buttons.
So apart from novelty features, what exactly does an iphone do thats any use ?

Ive had mine 14months and still enjoy using it and comes in very useful at times with the apps ive got
It has also lasted quite well in my pocket at work with my car keys while at work where it does get bashed about a fair bit, faults wise only every now and then it freezes but i have mine one pretty much 24/7 so not bad personally

I like mine as a cool little gadget, but I would fucking hate to actually try and use it seriously as a phone, cause its fucking shite as one!

ive had mine for 19 months now and no i havent got bored of it.
Friday and yesterday i went looking for a new phone to replace my iphone, spent both days looking and couldnt find one that i liked.
I was gonna get the 3gs but in the end decided that my 3g version was still good enough and didnt need to pay out the Ł189 for another Ł35 per month x 18 month contract, so just changed to a 30 day contract (for the iphone, free wifi and data,600min +12 texts) simplicity sim, keeping same number and all.
What i might do and im not sure yet is get the 4th gen (4g) when it comes out between April and July,if o2 are telling me correctly that is.
I use my phone every day plenty of times including diverting calls from work to it and its great, it gets covered in cutting oil and still takes the brunt.
To some people it maybe just a gimick, to others more so, the way i see it is thats its many things to many people and if i want to use for anything other than just a phone then i can, without to much bother.

Mixed opinons then!
Thats what I am concerned about, I text a fair bit and take a lot of pictures. Didnt like iphones message interface and camera's bit crap, but it does seem very good in other areas I would use such as internet and a few apps.
Paul - I'd rather punch myself in the face than get a Blackberry.

Agreed, I've got one, its fucking shite as a phone, its great as a silly little gimmick that you can download pointless random apps for when you are bored, but I have a phone as well that I actually use for making calls cause the battery lasts ages and for sending texts as I can type more quickly on it than on the iphone etc.

The other major issues for me is ...
1) The camera is shite !!!!
2) You cant bluetooth NON Iphones the photos you take !! (legally)
The best app I found is remote desktop.... Good for web hacking
I really miss my N95 8GB ...

Use mine as a phone, game device, web surfer, msn, email and video. Does all that brilliant for me. If you don't need anything more than a phone then it's a waste IMHO.
I'm not a text'r or should I say wasn't. So for me, texting on the iPhone is fine since that's how I really started using it, coming over from a traditional phone you may find it a bit awkward at first but you'll soon get the hang of it. I'm also a long time Apple user so for me I was happy that a Great phone was made that didn't run wincrap mobile os.

You can get a bluetooth app also aswell, i think its called ibluetooth?!

ibluetooth only talks to other iphones
Cant send them to a nokia for example...

No cause you cant use an i-touch to check your email unless you are near wifi etc, far better having a 3G iphone to do it with, likewise internet on the move etc, its really good for internet stuff, well other than its a bit of a pain to type into compared to say my old HTC which has a proper keyboard on it.

you do get your haters but to be honest i know my opinion is biased but it is a good phone, just got to get use to it
How ever saying that i most likely wont get another in 4months unless O2 give me a 3GS for free as im not going on a 24 month contract

TBH I just wish I had stumped up the cash for a decent new HTC rather than taking the pikey iPhone option instead
This is the one I saw (not sure if its a final design) that looked like what I am after really.

Totally agree with Chip.... its a toy.
I LOVE my Iphone. Used a few cool apps in Bath this weekend actually to book hotels, find restaurants and coffee shops and play games on whilst on toilet. Play music etc etc.
However I would NEVER be without my Blackberry Bold 9700 as well...
Iphones for show... Blackberrys for a pro!
