Default One for the Central Heating / Boiler experts!

Currently decorating the lounge and want to replace the manky old Honeywell Thermostat on the wall for a newer modern one.

Are the heating thermostats pretty much like for like or are they brand specific? I'd like to replace my current one (Honeywell) with this one:

http://www.heatmisershop.co.uk/produ...RT%252dTS.html

I'd like to think they are all the same but thought i'd double check! I have a conventional gas boiler (not a combi)

Cheers

they are just a basic on/off style switch but temp dependant, so "should" be universal. i do believe that they are and have seen many different ones used on similar boilers, however i am not a boiler expert and only really seen a few. but personally i dont think there is much difference...

That's a programable room thermostat, far superior to a normal room stat as it also eliminates the need for a programmer.
To be able to use that you will need a neutral at the existing room stat, most room stats don't use a neutral but you may be lucky.

Check if you have 3 wires at the existing stat not counting the earth wire.

Most thermostats do have a neutral or they wont work, some honeywell ones dont have a neutral or if it has a battery it usually doesnt. Id recomemend this one ACL-Drayton (Invensys) Digistat + Room Thermostat(Reference #302046) (7th down on the page) if your just after a room stat, it doesnt req a neutral so will work if you have or have not got one or the 8th one down if you want a programmerble one, again doesnt req a neutral.

or you could eliminate that one from the wall and have a remote control one somewhere else

Not overly fussed about all the goodies on it as since i've lived here (a year now) i've probably only adjusted it a couple of times!!

rs220bhp - with the wiring I have unscrewed it off the wall, I have a red wire, yellow wire and blue wire going into the stat. None of them are earth, the earth screw (and one other) have no wires going into it? Any ideas, can take a pic if its easier? Dont think there is a battery anywhere.

Are these stats being recommended the ones that keep the heating all on all the time but just lower the temp overnight instead of shutting the boiler right off? It's supposed to be more fuel efficient to drop the temp a bit rather than switch it right off overnight and have to raise the temp again in the morning isn't it?

Most dont have/req an earth, at a guess id say red is live from the clock, blue is gonna be your neutral and yellow will be switched live to your valve, i would fit the drayton one that i listed,, its good for the price and has digi display and tells you if below or has reached the set temp, it doesnt req a neutral cos it has a battery, so just make that safe. If you have a multimeter turn the heating on on clock and see where you have power between either red and yellow to neutral, will only be on one wire with the stat removed. Doesnt really matter which way you fit those 2 to the stat as its only a switch so will work either way round. If you need anymore info PM me

The wire going into number 3 will be your switched live and 4 and earth are empty? Is that right

good question. i have a mate that says he saved loads by doing it that way, but i am not sure. perhaps it also depends if your boiler is just an on/off type or one that can regulate it's outpt depending on the return temperature
