Default Virus Protection/Firewall.....

Beccy is having a shitty-fit because we don't run ANY virus protection/firewall. LOL. I'm just really careful what I do and have been lucky (so far, famous last words!!).

But to keep the fucking peace (you know what women are like), what is the best software that will cover us, either free of charge or not. I want something that is unobtrusive and doesn't spank system resources.

I've always used AVG and Ad-Aware, but I gather AVG is a bit resource hungry?

Ideas?

I find "avast!" is very good and uses no (noticeable) resources. Used it for years having got sick of memory-sapping Norton and the like.

Get a decent router with a built in firewall and you wont need anything.

I have moved to the Microsoft Security Essentials and that works fine for AV, have a router with firewall that does the rest.

Our Belkin Router apparently has a Firewall. So is that enough? Do I need to look at or alter any settings in it? Or will it be set up already?

Yeah nearly every router has a firewall, but these are more hardware firewalls constantly monitoring and denying connections through blocked ports.

Software firewalls are what you need, (Unless you are willing to buy a dedicated hardware firewall).

I'll tell you now, Kaspersky is the best out there, the only thing it lacks is online back up however, just buy a Ł35 external hdd and back up everything yourself.

Kaspersky Internet Security comes with firewall, anti-virus, anti adware, spyware, phishing. Everything you need. Plus uninstall at the end of your yearly subscription and reinstall.. Whalah! you have a full year again

Hope this helps.

Ryan

So what do you think software firewalls do?

Christian, I run a belkin router, MS security essentials. Never had any issues with the 5 machines that I have on it. If you really feel the need to run a software firewall too then use the one with XP/Vista/7, more than enough for the home user.

yes but outbound is not really needed unless you are already infected and then its too late

All depends on how risky a user you are, i like surfing the darkside so i need virtualy a bulletproof setup this is what i use and no mailware has defeated it yet

Comodo firewall with hips disabled
defensewall(policy based hips)
a squared antimailware
sandboxie(run firefox sandboxed in a virtual enviroment)
Acronis true image(if all else fails go back to an entire disc backup)

if running windows you can harden the system by running in a lua and other things as well but will make things difficult if you download a lot

I havnt payed a penny for any of my security as i just google and there is always free giveaways out there

using kaspersky (lol only one i ever paid for)
on the desktop computer. one of the best out there

only Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 2010 is better though

laptop i use eset nod 32, free for a life time lol

firewall, well, built in is ok, but the problem with most of them you cant really block, unblock, get real logs ect of what is being done, but work for most people=)
better than sofware firewall that is a bugger

kaspersky dont use any

A second layer of security maybe? And if you look at what you said " If you really feel the need to run a software firewall too then use the one with XP/Vista/7" Your agreeing with what i said to some extent, A Software firewall is what you need.

Hardware firewalls block any connections through blocked ports whilst examining each packet that comes through an open port to see if they meet the defined rules, if so they continue to be routed to the incoming destination, if not they are dropped.

Software firewalls allow and disallow connections on an application level, monitoring connections between the network and application. For agruements sake, if you allow connections through port 25 (SMPT) to only your default mail (say outlook) then only outlook can communicate on that port. Software firewalls don't analyse packets in the same way hardware firewalls do.

Hardware firewalls protect multiple computers in a network, Software protect at an individual level...

Also if you consider the price of a dedicated hardware firewall and the price of your router with a hardware firewall built in, do you really think the belkin you buy is going to live up to its name when it comes to a remote hack? Why has nearly every router manufactor included one bundled? Your ISP offers a hardware firewall at there end, (Virgin do atleast) so why do we need one in our routers too? Think about it, Layers.

And with that in mind, thats why i suggested a software firewall on the individual machines.

Software and Hardware firewalls are very similar, but also very different.

It is one of the best free anti-viruses out there, if I wasn't using the McAfee software from BT I'd defiantly be looking to download Avast pronto.

AVG is very good as nearly everyone has a router now this alone is sufficent (NAT), (Most have firewalls as well) far superior to the days where PC'S were directly connected to the net.

Software firewalls are pointless as the problem is ALREADY at your PC then the firewall deals with it, where as a hardware firewall has dealt with the traffic before it has a chance to reach your PC.

Windows Firewall is good although does not provide outbound protection unless Windows Vista/7.

Steer clear of Mcafee/Norton always has been resource heavy.

Martin
