I had an Abbey Visa debit card and it got cloned earlier this year and I got fleeced for over 2 grand. Didn't get any help at all from them. Just basically had to kiss good bye to it. Thieving scumbag cunts.

With Lloyds now.

I think it's safer to buy stuff on credit rather than debit cards. Debit cards I don't think offer any protection. Not that I've seen anyway.

nope, just means you can use it more places

just get a credit card and as soon as you buy something with the c/card, just pay it off immediatley through your debit card. Credit cards are only bad if you dont pay it off immediately or let the balance mount up each month

that's what i do

It didn't offer me any protection at all mate.

I'm only just starting to get myself back on track as I had to borrow quite a bit of money from my best mates dad so I could just pay my bills and only just paid him back!!

Sounds silly but now I have no faith in banks at all so now make sure my direct debits go out on the first of the month and then draw the rest of the money out and keep it somewhere safe. Fuck having that happen to me again. Once bitten, twice shy and all that!!

It's bloody horrible mate. Going to draw some cash out then realising there was nothing there.

I hate borrowing any amount of money so to go to my mates dad with my tail between my legs and asking to borrow some spondoolies was the very last thing I wanted to do!! Lol!

The credit card method is another option. I cut all mine up and cancelled them so I wouldn't be tempted to spend!!! Lol!

you do have protection with visa debit cards, it just takes longer to get your money back as apposed to a credit card, a mate of mine had his debit card cloned, they cleaned his account out, when he called the bank they canceled the card etc but said he had to wait until hes next statement came and bring it to his local branch to get it sorted.
took a bit of hassle but he got all hes money back in the end.

i use a pre paid credit card now (the o2 money card) you load up how much you want to spend and away you go, if it gets cloned, fuck it they can only take whats on the card and nothing more and o2 txt you whenever its charged, plus your still covered as its a visa card

How do you 'top it up' then? And surely its the same as a debit card?

you can either load money on via your credit or debit card which you can only do via your login details when you sign up to o2 or you can choose to "top up" at a newsagents/selected stores with cash. it is the same as a visa debit card but if its cloned etc they can only get the money thats on the card so not your savings.

check out http://money.o2.co.uk/ should tell you everything you need to know.

i got the the card cos i was worried about getting my bank debit card cloned etc, and didnt like the idea of using credit so this seemed the best option as i'm with o2 anyway. i do believe paypal also do a simular card as well.

lol thats a good point but i think you can only transfer funds over online, as you register your cards online on your o2 account and you do it through there. if you do it at the newsagents etc you'd pay with cash (i do anyway)

i've not linked any of my bank cards with it as i just go to the shop and top it up. this does mean i'm restricted on where i can use the card as its not adult varified, so bascially i can't buy porn with it lol but i can use it in bars/resturants/petrol stations etc so i'm not bothered.

I can't believe your bank didn't help you when your card was cloned!!! Surely it's THEIR fault that there's not sufficient protection on cards which allows it to happen.

Don't keep a shed load of cash in your current account. Transfer it to a savings account. Only keep enough in there to get you by, if you need any more just transfer it from your savings.

If your card is cloned, your bank should refund you the money I am shocked at Kitchen Devil's story!

The only time when a bank would tell you to foot the bill is if you confess to telling your PIN to somebody or letting someone else use it as then you are in breach of the terms and conditions of the bank account.

You are more protected on a credit card apart from anything else the fraudsters are spending the banks money not your own as is the case on a debit card.
