Cat C + Q plate...?
I've recently got an RS Turbo thats been registered Cat C. My question is how much can I get away with modifiying it before they'd want to register it on a Q plate when it gets tested? I've got a different engine to go in it but I'm not sure how much I can change on the car. Any info will be great.

Why would they want to register it on a Q? Cat C cars only need a VIC check and all they do is check the cars identity, we have took them before and they havnt even checked the engine number.

I was just wondering how much you could change before it's identity would come into question. Thats why I asked, just wanted to check. Cheers.

dvla deal with licensing and regestration
vosa deal with the actual vehicles,
your car has been advised to dvla by the insurer that its cat c, so dvla put a vic marker against the vehicle log and withdraw the v5.
to get a new v5,
vosa complete a vic test (cant tell you whats involved by law) but the question they answer simply is..
is this the same vehicle...yes or no.
if yes, vosa remove vic marker, dvla then re issue v5 on original no plate,
if no, police take car for investigation, then normally realise its ok and dvla then issue v5 on original no plate,

and if you want to remove the vic marker on the logbook put a private plate ont he car and it never comes back, not even if you take the plate off and it goes back to the reg, gone forever

they still do the Q plates as i just been inquiring about re-shelling a car ?? to keep a cherished plate
and if the car fails a vic then it needs to go and have a sva then it would be put on a Q plate
if vic goes ok then it goes on original plate
police only seize vehicle if they have interest in its id i.e. if they think the i.d. or parts used are stolen ones
the only thing you can't cant is the chassis if this is changed then the car will go on a Q plate

Q plates are for cars that have no identity stolen recovered that have had a id change and the original id can not be sorced or found, plus kit cars, reshells can be registered on the original plate if you can prove you used 60% of the original cars parts,a vic check is to confirm the cars id has not been changed,ie if a cat c car has been repaired and is not a ringer if your car fails you dont see it again until the police have found out if it is a ringer that is why they take the car from you for the check so you dont know where it is

is it fuck garbage, last year i bought a cat c golf turbo, vic'd it taxed it then went to dvla and put my plate onto it, logbbok was clear, a few months later i took plate off and it went back onto origional reg, v5 came back clear
two months ago i bought a cat c bmw 320d, done it again, its sat on my driveway now with my private plate on it and the v5 is clear
ive been doing this for years with my own cars, my friends have done that same
i can 100 percent say its true

its jujst the way it happens i spose, i only found it out by accident, its not really worth doing to be honest if your selling them on but if you keep a car for say good few months which i do for the wife its worth it, the cars still on hpi of course but the vic extensively damaged repaired marker vanishes which helps.

having worked for vosa and completed hundreds of vic tests, i can assure you that dvla issue a vic marker when the insurance company inform them it has been put in a write off class.
a v5 will not be issued with a vic marker against the car.
just like a v5 will not be issued with a cod marker against a car

yes but once you have the vic the marker is on the v5, supposidly for life and its a horrible thing to have wrote ont he bottom of a logbook
lasty year i personally vic'd 30 cars that i had repaired. i know the system mate, its a hard game too at the mo
the ones i keep for us to use as family wagon are normally worth 5k ish so its worth paying to transfer my plate onto it and the logbook comes back clear

i think were getting confused, once the car is awrote off insurance comapnys tell dvla, who then will not release a v5 untill a vic test has been comepleted
then when you get your logboog wrote on the bottom is vic tested on such and such vehicle extensively damaged repaired
once i put my p plate on it never comes back it vanishes

but you will have to tax it again, which the system will not allow as it will still have a marker against it, up to a year is quite normall for markers to be on there. it is a closed loop

pmsl jesus, ive also bought cat c cars of people with the logbbok, motd the car taxed the car and only a few months later when i want a v5 have i had to vic it
mother in law for example car got wrote off cat c, the let her keep it i repred it she gave it to her son, sent off logbook and they said needs vic, that was a year ago we are still taxing it and using it everyday
its not that bad and nothing is mentioned when taxing it or by the plod, its purely a v5 marker
i also buy cat c cars for example, these days they come with roadtax, so i mot them and use them for a couple months or lend them to family etc if there int he shit, its not illegal to use the car if it needs a vic
