cleaned out my egr last night with carb cleaner was sh--ed up badly, inlet was not to bad so left it,time permitting-the car smoked really bad before especially at night when car lights are behind you and put foot to the boards, last night i also blanked off my egr and today no smoke at all and drove 170 miles today and read 53.8 mpg but this afternoon the engine management light came on, no loss in performance though just the light on, is there anything i can do to fool the light or do i have to remove the blank plate i am getting better mpg now the blank is on definitely

After searching for what seems ages, i believe that valve is a kind of a pressure release valve of some sort mate.

I cant help on the sensors that need changing BUT if you clean the MAF, very carefully with a cotton bud and some kind of brake and carb cleaner, you should see a better mpg this way also.

hope this helps.

Cheers for the info people. Am gonna crack on with this stuff now the weather seems to be clearing. Didn't want to risk doin anything and getting it wrong cop my hands were cold lol. Cost me an arm and a leg over xmas and stuff tho. The only sensor i read in this thread is the camshaft position sensor which is on the top of the engine about 6 to 8 inches to the right of the oil filler cap.

After reading through this topic, I am definitely cleaning the EGR and maybe the intake. I have about 56.5k miles in the car (91,000 kms) and never had this done. I have the smoke, but as for mpg, I would say it varies. Motorway did not clean it as well as the regular "highway" (around 70-80 mph driving instead of constant 100 mph). I am curious how much carbon residue will come out.

Thanks for the great info here, I guess I will follow the wikiford link guide.

Cheers,

R.

ps.: Any idea what type of EGR do I have? (Car is a MY07 Jan, but windows say MY06 year end manufacturing).

Have a few days off, so I thought I'd clean out my EGR valve today as I was thinking it may need a clean out.
I've read various threads about some who are clean and some that are really bunged up. Mines was the later.

My first comment was Holy Fuck there was about 8mm of a thick oil like coating round the inside of the EGR, it was horrible stuff.

I attacked it with brass brushes and 6 tins of carb cleaner - and my daughters baby bath to dunk the EGR in. shhhh
I've not taken the car out yet as the roads are too mucky at the moment to see if it improves my MPG.

Anyway pics

Yes Keith that is carpet on my garage floor.

Also took off all the pipework and manifold which was in a similar state.

It's an easier job to do on a Derv than on a V6 but the mess is very much the same.

Right peeps....bit of an update....

I have cleaned all the EGV ect and relaced the Cam sensor..........

But my MPG is still only 34mpg with town driving and on a run of 150mile it went up to 36mpg....but soon dropped back down.

Now what i have noticed is that when i start the car from cold i get a little white smoke, only for about 10 seconds then its fine.........

So i am thinking that i have a lazy injector somewhere............So does it just need recoding or will i need a new injector.......

Also....what injectors will my car have, its a 52 plate TDCi 115bhp model???

Good enough reason for me dont worry i wont.

Been looking on MEG all afternoon and keep seeing what my problem is with diff soultions.

Prob best if i just lay it out and see what you guy's think.

Had the car for a while now 53 plate tdci 115bhp.

Ever since i got it the glow plug light randomly starts flashing and engine power goes qhuck turn of the key off and on sorted and it's working again.

I have changed and cleaned everything (Ford filters) apart from injectors or having them reprogramed.

It's got better but still does it.

Reading MEG earlier there is a guy there that has the same symtoms as me but his turned out to be an electric actuator????

Any ideas anyone??

This maybe a stupid question, and I cant be arsed going back thru the thread to find out, but how are you getting your mpg? Are you working it out yourself, or relying on the dash display? And if it is the dash, are you resetting it each time you're checking?

I cant find the proof but found people who had problems then found people who hadnt, using different liquid injector cleaners, if i was you i wouldnt use it.
Thats why i edited my post.

I have similar from start up and i think sometimes its when the glow plug light hasnt gone out and i turn the key too early, i personaly think the ecu throws a quick wobbly because the glowplugd arent warmed or what ever they do, depending on the ambient temp.

Try resetting it, after all it is an average, you might find you're getting better than you think.

Mind me asking how much you paid for that little lot? Presume you didn't get much (if any) change from Ł500?

Your symptoms sound like mine, but I reckon just one of my injectors is dicky (as the whole lot were replaced in September last year)

Mine don't match autodata just wondering if that's wrong or I have got closer to my fix
