what you on about Kofi?

Chatter is basicly the pressurised air that is in your boost pipes, coming back out the air filter when you shut the throttle.

It dont happen (at all or as much) with cars with DVs (recirc ones like most std cars, or aftermarket ones) as DVs are there to let the air escape another way.

The noise itself is made by the air rushing backwards thru the turbo, hitting the blades which are trying to turn the other way (i think thats what Kofi means in the quote above ).

Technicly its not good for your turbo, in reality youd have to be running mega boost for any real damage to happen.

Things like long pipes and airboxes muffle the sound, so as direct opening to your turbo inlet as possible lets you hear the sound clearer.

Obv things like more boost makes the sound louder as there more air getting back out the turbo.

Thing is tho, 'itsmeagain' has a point with what he wrote & I was gonna ask about this on another thread, but seeing as someone has asked: IS CHATTER GOOD FOR THE CAR/TURBO?

We know that the noise made is from air coming back thro the intake system & stalling the turbo (so slowing the turbo in the process) and possibly reducing the life if the turbo by doing so (and potentially causing the main turbo shaft to shatter in one case I heard?). A dump valve eliminates this (if the correct one is fitted) by getting rid of this air before it returns/tries to return through the turbo, keeping the turbo spinning in the right direction, meaning better spin up back on the throttle and also decreasing lag (albeit minimal).

Obviously chatter sounds soo much cooler than a d/v, which in turn sounds better than nothing (imo)...but does running enough boost to cause chatter reduce the life of turbo components? If so, why do people run their car like that? Is the noise worth the expense of a new turbo.

Reason I'm asking is that I was going to fit my d/v to the S1, but my mate took a vid over christmas & it started to chatter. Sounded cool & delayed my d/v fitting..but if it's gonna potentially destroy the turbo, then I might fit the d/v.

Opinions welcome please by people in the know.
Cheers

It wont destroy your turbo, only does damage if your running huge boost (ie 25psi+) on somthing like a T4, generally turbos are pretty strong
