Default Having a General Anaesthetic. Terrified

I'm having an Operation soon (first time) & i'm so terrified about the General Anaesthetic

What will it feel like being 'put to sleep' ? Petrified of having a Tube down my throat.

Any reassurance very grateful for.

thanks. i've never been in Hospital & so scared

i got a general in june to have my hand stitched back together after severing my thumb tendon and slicing the corner ogf the palm of my hand and damaging the nerves. it was fine and the last thing you remember is in the pre op room getting the gas to put you to sleep, the tube is added afte your asleep.... you wake up a couple of hours later with a sore head and a dry sore throat .your fine about half an hour later but you have to stay in the ward for 4 hours after the op before your allowed out.
nothing but praise for the nurses and docs that dealt with me.what are you in for?

yes, youll wake up in a post op room and itll all be over and youll be badaged up and ready to go.
i did this....

2 weeks later it was back to have the stitches removed. the ones stitching the tendon together hurt a bit when removed but the surface stitches holding my skin together felt nothing being removed.

I just remember laying on the bed and feeling like i was falling asleep but really quickly, the next thing i remembered was waking up and feeling really " hungover"

I was quite scared too, but it was absolutely fine.

youll feel nothing. you breath in then your asleep. it was my first op and i was worried but all in all it was a easy experience with no pain other than mild discomfort.
i much prefered the time i had morphine injections . if you fight the sleep you get a huge free buzz.

Don't worry about it mate, everyone has things they're scared of. You need to just put it into perspective: all that's going to happen is you're going to go to sleep. It's just a procedure, and it's carried out by people who need to train for a large part of their young life to do it. It'll be a breeze, but it's natural to feel scared.

mine was only 2.5 hours.
you have to lie about in a ward all day until you get taken then after you get a decent meal until your allowed to leave after the 4 hours. they had tv in the ward and lots of pretty young things in attendence to plump your pillows.

When i was little i had a few ops, i remember when they used to put me to sleep the nurse said see what number you can count to, i bet you cant reach 5, and i never did

Im not sure if they did it differently but i remember this milk coloured stuff going up a tube, then when it got so far i got a tingly feeling all over then i was out. All that happens within a 5seconds period

Dont worry about waking up half way through either, i never woke up until a while after

I've had several general anaesthetics. Just as other people have said, they just start you on the anaesthetic and get you to count back and you're asleep within a few seconds. The next thing you'll know you'll be out of the op and waking up. You will feel woozy for a while but you'll be fine mate. And there won't be any tubes down your throat while you're awake.

just hope you dont wake up with your boxers on back to front and your arse is stinging.
wear cotton boxers or youll need to go in naked under your gown. anything other than cotton can cause static and effect the equipment apparently.
theyre all qualified at what they do. i think its very rare they make mistakes.

My Mum had loads of them when she was in a car accident... that's what I actually presumed you'd be having anyway. It wasn't even on her mind as she had more important things to worry about at the time.

It's like having blood test done. You might not like the idea of a needle, but if you actually accept it and can bear to watch while they do it, you realise how minor it actually is. It doesn't pose any threat whatsoever. Just imagine being out in afghanistan getting shot at, while being away from the people you love. Puts everything in perspective for me.

It's being done for your benefit. You should be happy that we've advanced as much as we have and can go through operations of all kinds without even being aware of them. Back a few hundred years you'd have to have limbs cut off with just a bottle of whiskey to take your mind off things.

You don't really feel anything, maybe a sensaion like water running down your arm then boom your out. When you come round expect to feel groggy.

I was shitting myself right up to the point were you are lying on your bed and watching as the anaesthetist was pluging me in etc.
He then put the tube thingy in my hand and then proceded to pump some stuff into the tube.
He then lent over me and said "Good Night"
Next thing, i wake up in the post op room
Job Jobed
basically , the best thing to tell yourself this

You get an injection, have a sleep, wake up have a cuppa and possibly a bit of lunch then go home

Nothing to be scared of, all that you will know is that you have an injection, called a pre med, this makes you sleepy, then when in the op theatre a mask is put over you whilst you swear blind you can count to ten, but no one ever does.
They will only intubate, with a tube in your throat if there are breathing difficulties, or other risk factors.
The most horrible bit for me is when you come round, talk about major feeling groggy, but fine after a sleep.
It is statistically very safe also 1.23 deaths per million, in 2008.
I have at least one major op a year for various reasons, going to have a shunt put in left ventricle of me brain in January, but not worried.

oh and fcuk me i forgot to mension time......it flys past like you would never believe
I remember looking at the clock when i came round and it was 11.00am
Then i looked again at the clock in the ward it was 1:00pm
The mrs said she was popping to the shops i said ok and nodded of and when i woke up when she got back it was 5:00pm
We left for home and when i got home it was like straight to bed as i felt fcuk'd again and slept right through to the morning

I had an operation on my back a couple of years ago and the general anasthetic was the best thing about it

Seriously, i went for surgery at 1am and i don't remember a thing till lunchtime the next day, i was ridiculously exhausted and tired and woke up feeling the most relaxed and chilled i think i ever have

I had a canular in my hand and i remember i was still chatting to the surgeons and stuff and bang, out like a light

Nothing at all to worry about ive had a few, it can be a bit strange for the first few seconds when you first come round, Last time I came round after an op I was crying for some strange reason till I realised where I was, felt like a rite knob apparantly its quite common tho

Nothing to worry about mate. I got 'put out' when i was about 3 to have an op. They overestimated my weight by quite abit aswell, so gave me too much, meaning I was out for a lot longer than i should have been! But it was all fine. nothing to worry about mate

I've been under with a general a few times now, the only problem I ever had was last time took a bit longer to come round than I should have. Nothing to worry about going under though, it happens so quick, and painless you'll wonder what you were worrying about. And I dont know about anyone else, but its been the best sleep I've ever had lol,

The tingly rush off the anesthetic was great imo,10,9,8, erm sev gone .If they give you a diazepam first I don't think you will be that bothered about having the op .I dont know if they still do this but they did with me.
I was more concerned about when I fell asleep on the ward after. When I went to sleep the cover was at my knees, when I woke back up it was at my chest.I was thinking fuck did I have a stiffy in my sleep ??.
