Default any IT guys on?

keep getting a message on my laptop when starting up-it says windows cannot start up as file \WINNIT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM may be corrupt or missing?

its an HP laptop 2003 or somethin so its relativly old in that sense but does/did work great untill this yesterday.

it then says to select r from the 1st screen and try booting from the windows disc but i dont have any discs as the laptop was baught from a mate a couple of years ago.

any ideas apart from get a new laptop!?! lol!

cheers for any help!

martin.

i duno how good ya are wiht PCs or what, but most of the time this solves this problem:
Take the hard drive out and stick it in another PC with the same OS(operating system i.e. windows XP) on it. clikc start> Run and then type in "regedit" without the quotes. The clikc file > load hive , then browse to this folder on the laptop hard drive c:>winnt>system 32>config and then clikc on SYSTEM. it should then load the hive and say its been repaired. Then right click on it and unload the hive (just right click andclick unload hive) stick the hard drive back into the laptop and bobs your uncle.

As its the registry thats corrupt you may get the same error but with a differnt file i.e.\WINNIT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE but its just doing the same but select SOFTWARE instead of SYSTEM.

it sounds pritty long winded but its only a 5 min job
