its possible; plenty of big power cars still on standard t5's, they are a very good gearbox in standard form

its toruqe that kills boxes, not horse power, but at the levels your talking about then its a bit more of a lottery.

Too many variables, lots of cars out there running almost 500bhp with standard boxes, the question is how long will it last if you drive it to it's potential, not long! You can easily do boxes at stage 3 level, but then again depends how many miles on the box already.
My advice would be don't expect it to be reliable at over stage 3 spec or running high boost on a stage 3, you cold have a 500bhp car and not launch it ever and it might never break, but what's the point if you can't use the power.? All for 4x4 by the way!
And without souding patronising, if you can't afford to get a decent box, you should't really have a car of that power as the other associated running costs could cripple you after a short while anyway.

Bara box and a strengthening plate for the front diff as a minimum, depends what your doing obviously. Keen 2 find out more about those opplinger (sp) gear kits though.

Default standard box

i took most of the teeth off 3rd gear in my t5 with 350bhp in a year and i dont really drive like a twat either i also smashed all my planet and sun gears to bits in my diff with a launch i now have just over 500bhp and run a big tooth gear kit seems ok and a gripper diff but i did brake all the teeth off my crown wheel and pinion so i had to get another and have it shot peened and supper finished my torque is about the same in each conversion

aye, im just saying a normal sorta 500hp engine, what 450lbft trq ? and it was ok

he had it for a while, he broke two iirc when he had a wild set of cams in, the boost came in hard at 4500-5000 and it ripped the teeth off third iirc

he tamed em down and it was ok, and it didnt exactly get an easy life

I refer to my original post, I can see why you might build a high power engine and have a standard box, then uprate the box WHEN it breaks, BUT all this talk of "it's not power, it's torque that kills the box", who builds high power low torque engines???

A gearbox can handle lots of power as long as you don't abuse it. I live in the land of big block V8s and most use automatics of course. But many live with Bog Warbler boxes for many years.

I lived with a T9 in my Merkur that had around 250bhp for many years. Adding big tires and a LSD makes the box work harder so now I have a T5 now - but I'm not hard on boxes.

Stay off gravel, change the fluid, let it warm up, double clutch downshifts and don't drop the clutch. Avoid a solid puck clutch too - use something with some springs in it.

a cossie that makes over 450lb ft of torque under 5500 rpm would smash a standard box to bits in very little time

Well duh. My point was that high power levels can make a box last longer if you are nice to it. Most people with 450lbft use it liberally. A car with 450lbft driven by my grandmother would have a standard gearbox last a long time.

Thankfully the options for big spec gearboxes are cheaper for me over here. Tremec who now owns Bog Warbler makes some great gearboxes that laugh in a modded Cosworth YB's face. I'm content with my stage III power and a standard box.

The options for 4x4 owners thin very quickly.

what do u mean use it liberally? why would u tune a car and then not use it to its full potential lol ill tell u why because u know the standard t5 will brake lol and yep your right my gran would make one last because as u say she would be useing it LIBERALLY because if she used it matched to how the car was built to perform she would brake it!

the tremec tko600 from the 3550 range is a good uprgade from the t5

if i was to build a big power 2wd, this is the box i'd go for

how much & how common are they in Canada/ States?
as a guide this is the same box at reyland http://reyland.co.uk/Details.asp?ProductID=164

Reyland's box would cost me about $4500 CDN to get it to my front door. If I bought it here I'd pay about $2900 CDN. (the TK0600 which has the better gearing)

There is one for sale in the local craigslist for $2000. I could probably ask the same for the Cossie 2wd gearbox.

I could have a new one in my hands in a week, or used this afternoon. So - easy to come by in my books.

i think i would try and source one from the states/ Canada and have it shipped to me here in the UK; i wonder what the shipping costs would be. I guess it would have to go on a pallett

I shipped a 2wd cossie box once from the UK and the price didn't seem too insane. This was over 10 years ago and I made shite money back then.

Order from a place on the East Coast of the States and get them to ship it (obviously) by boat. With shipping and VAT I'm not sure what the price would be but (with apologies) to Martin his price seems high.
