Granted 50k is a shatload, but is the norm for mental spec cars these days, esp when theyve been owned for a while and had lots of stages of mods...
Compared to cars that compete in similar events in Japan, Oz, USA, the cars in our events are fucking shite.
Tuning companies turn up, like CRD and Abbey, with all the mechanics and tools, but what you expect, but they still the distinct minority, at least 75% of the cars are non-tuner cars
But events like this across the world are always used by tuners to show off their talents with road cars, and thats what the general public like to see, road cars that they do, or could own, modded to the extreme and in action, they couldnt give a fuck if the cars are owned by tuners or not.
Hardly any cars that have won any of the diciplines in any of the TOTBs have been tuner cars (TBH CRD Supra, RC Dev' EVO, and RK Tuning R32 are the only 3 i can think of...), the others (inc Ronnie whos won it 3 times in a row overall) might have had a lot of cash spent on em, but it still private individuals.
How can you term amatuer or pro? Just cause someone has spent more money, dont make em a pro.
IMO to stop people pussying out of entering cause they know they wont win (and dont want to go just to compete) there should be more detailed classes, seperate engine capacity classes as well as drive, and maybe classes depending on certain mods too...
Il put any money Cossie people would go MENTAL for TOTB if there was an "under 2550cc" class.
IMO they dont compete as they know its a lot of time, trouble, and money, to get your ass kicked still, but if they was up against the Scoobies, Pulsars, EVOs, GTSTs, etc, theyd feel more confident and enter (Tho there was 10sec Scoobies at TOTB3, never mind the EVOs...)

itsmeagain, if 25% of the cars present are tuner cars, is it really an ameteur event, cause to me if even 1 tuner is present then its not ameteur really, its business.
thats my big problem with the event, tuning companies just view it as cheap advertising
still a good event, but it gets more commercial evey year IMHO

Thing is, there a LOT of private individuals who spend a whole shitload more than the tuners do on theri Demo cars...
Thats why hardly any tuner cars have ever won an event there, they generally not the fastest...
The tuners let their customers cars do the talking in the UK generally, spending a 100k on a car just for "advertising" doesnt sound too clever to me, not in a smallish country like this, esp when almost all the cars are built from products made abroad...
To me its not that fact of the event being "Amateur" or "Pro" thats the issue, the issue is the classes are soo vague and widely spaced, a lot of people have "problems" with it cause they blatantly know its a lot of cash and effort to get wasted by a mega bucks car, and be an also ran, there needs to be adjusted rules...
Its the same in any kind of competition, different leagues, its all whos got the most money and who spends it most wisely, and TBH most the big money cars there dont spend their money that wisely with regards to the event specificly.

I agree there should be different classes than just FWD,RWD,AWD.I think power levels would even out the field more, even better power to weight as then the FWD&RWD couls compete with the heavier AWD.
Just making it engine capacity based would still give those with more money/car owned for longer the advantage as there a plenty of 400/500,even 600bhp Fords but not many other marques in that bracket. It would defeat the object really.
The more complicated you make the rules though, the less likely i is to happen.

Does a Rally cross track have mud, if so my car wont start when its near mud .
1000Bhp, Im not Karl Dingy, only claim what i have , which is probably about 200 more than his anyway.
Happy new year.

Ill stand by that statement all day long, cause i know how much adverts in these sorts of mags cost, and when you look at the amount of exposure these cars get on the net as well from the event you should realise it would cost a fortune, not to mention the time on Sky etc.
We ALL know who rocket ronnie is, everyone who is into fast cars knows who rocket ronnie is, he has achieved that for a cost of what, 100K?
Now i know that he is an individual and not a company, but you have to admit that is cheap for becoming a household name in the circle of modded motors, so companies are bound to want to do the same.

Tuners may not want the biggest fastest car ever, as i would imagine they would prefer a quick reliable car, as i cant see a car blowing up every time the word power is mentioned being good business.

The thing is only the "properly" tuned cars hold together it would appear...so bad news for most in the Cossie scene ..NOT good advertising thats why they dont enter! ...infact i think your find i will be the only one having a go at 200mph this year other than Rodney again ...They all say whats the point in doin top speed runs...well my answer to that is....if it stays together your a competant tuner and it seems its hard to get one to stay together judging by the lack of interest! .....Thats why mine will go bang

IMHO they need to seriously look at the safety aspect, how long before someone gets hurt.
AFAIK there is little thought about this.
As someone who competes i accept the risks but these cars running at TOTB ARE competition cars in all but name.
They should have to fulfill at least the basics such as Cage, Extinguishers, Fireproof overalls etc.
The last thing we want is motorsport in general being brought into disrepute.
AFAIK there is little thought about this.

Granted the three times past winner Ronnie's is pretty damn a road car, but still feel the top cars are more race cars than street cars.

In order to have a level playing field you need regulation, the anything goes attitude sounds cool initially but is unsustainable.
Money will always buy you success in any form of motorsport but IMHO TOTB is not motorsport its more of a showcase for tuners be it professionals or home.
I think it needs to decide what it is, if its a pure speed event then it needs affiliation with the RAC/MSA and then obviously all that goes with it licenses, safety, scruitineering, rules and regulation.
But if not take it as what it is a bit of fun albeit expensive fun.
If the figures are to be believed they could have a bloody good go at winning a local or even national championship with that sort of expenditure.

TOTB and other competitons can be really good advertising... but they are far from cheap and far from risk free

In that case neither are most plumbers
But ye that used to be the case, had to be escorted through
hope they got quick escort vehicles tho
Think I read somewhere recently tho that that has now changed, like displaying a compressed gas sticker on the car (no longer required)

It wasn't a rally car
It was a full on racing car with a championship winning driver
If Sean gets his car done it will MURDER anything around the handling course!!!!!!!!!!!
If he lets me drive it
Merry Christmas by the way Deano I trust Santa brought you all that you asked for?
It just that Mike told me the 8' vibrating arse penetrators that strap onto motorbike seats were in short supply this year.

Porkie, i knnow ronnie doesnt do it for advertising, im just using him as an example of how much it DOES work in that respect, he is now someone we have all heard of, 100K of adverts in a magazine wont do that.

Porkie Sean wants to lose weight from the car , not be penalised with a weight penalty by letting you drive

It works because he won 3 years on the trot through great driving, awesome preperation by Abbey and himself and I know he won't mind me saying a little 'good luck'
I know what you are saying Chip but I just don't agree with it.
Doesn't matter though mate, if we all thought the same about everything the world would be a very dull and boring place!
If you go to this years event, make sure you come over and say hello. We will have cold beer and the best view of the show

No worries Stu, glad to make you laff as that other thread is very sad and depressing
BUT Talking of Ribs I am just eating one now! a lovely chinese one!
As you can see Deano, I have soooo much faith in my driving skills, I don't need to worry about weight penalties.
Although my new years resolution is to STOP eating Chinese whilst sitting at the computer....
Only because I keep dropping special fried Rice on the Keyboard and it drops in and the keys get sticky and mushy to press
