st170 fuel consumption

quite shocked how when driven in grandad mode it can be a pretty economical car, I drove from bristol to torquay last week, 106 miles and averaging 70-80 all along the m5 and used just short of half a tank

today done exactly the same trip but in less of a hurry, ie sat behind an arctic all the way and its only just dropped slightly from the full mark. quite surprised....may I add i dont make a habit of driving at 56 mph on the motorway but i left early through boredom and thought stuff it if i stay behind the lorry i am not actually slowing anyone else down.

anyway whats other 170 owners views as normally this one is absolute crap on fuel, ie 240 miles to a tank urban, my last one managed about 280 no probs but this one is a bit juicier for some reason (maybe i just have a heavier right foot now)

Tom

Glenn_ 23-10-2009 02:22 PM

All ive heard off people is how shite they are on fuel.I so want a ST170 for the mrs.

CoupeUK 23-10-2009 02:23 PM

Mixed driving I get around 220 miles to a tank.

j6kyt 23-10-2009 02:24 PM

we had one before the st-2 and i thought it was fairly economical.

220 to a tank, fook me what you doing to it?

Mixed driving, occasional bit of foot down action and I get 320 miles from a tank, have seen this down to 280 before though! Drive like a grandad and I will get 350-360, which works out at about 32mpg.

Big Will_ 23-10-2009 03:33 PM

I used to budget/plan around doing 280 miles to a tank - if i was doing pure motorway cruising it was more like 320ish.

Driving like a nob i could get it down to under 200miles.

With my supercharged one around Oulton Park it was doing around 5mpg!

tsutton 23-10-2009 08:24 PM

I'm averaging 250 to 320 miles from full tank, depending on how excited my right foot is!

I get very similar figures out of my ST2 :)

st3v3 23-10-2009 08:41 PM

i had nearly 400 once out of mine, think it was nearer 380 though.

Lambchop 23-10-2009 08:47 PM

jesus christ some pish figures there. my frs does 240 min and up to 280 day to day.

cjwood555 23-10-2009 08:55 PM

The most I ever got out of mine was 420miles from a tank - that was a motorway-only journey to Edinburgh and back. But typically it was 280-320...

Glenn_ 23-10-2009 08:57 PM

How much does it cost for a full tank.

About £60 if V Power

RichieST 23-10-2009 09:11 PM

From the fuel light cost me about £52 to fill up!

Just about the same too - filled up earlier this evening - £1.15 - full tank cost me £59 for BP Ultimate.

Glenn_ 23-10-2009 09:14 PM

Not that bad then.

personally i think its pish if it does same as a turbo'd FRS which is fucking miles quicker

It's Czech Mate 23-10-2009 09:53 PM

Useless thread, unless someone measures distance against fuel used, ie brim tank, drive, brim tank, then nobody knows what MPG they're doing.

no just over a second lol

Chris69 23-10-2009 11:39 PM

i bet the ST170/FRS/ST225 is not much difference mpg wise when driving without foot to the floor- quite good isn't it

mcst 24-10-2009 12:25 AM

My mrs can make it run on fresh air!!! I only have to start it and its used quarter of a tank:cry: I've had it as low as 180 miles from petrol light to petrol light! Generally though mixed driving sees it at about 230ish average to a tank. I gave up checking once i discovered a regular 30mpg was a pipedream! I tried to keep the revs low etc and drove like an old woman and it made so little difference i gave up! My mrs must be much smoother thats all, i love it that she saves all that fuel for me to rag the arse off it on the long way home at midnight!! The earache i get when she see's ive caned 1/4 tank on a 16 mile round trip!

The best i've had is about 340 on a run to a tank.

mozzy 24-10-2009 09:26 AM

when i had my last one i had 117 miles from full to track, a day of ragging around a track then back home again

Ebonycossie4x4 24-10-2009 09:57 AM

Just keep it out of VVT and you will be fine.

mozzy 24-10-2009 10:00 AM

isnt the st170 constant vvt on the inlet

~nomad~ 24-10-2009 10:21 AM

i drove one for about 110 miles on i think less than 15quids worth.

mozzy 24-10-2009 10:24 AM

they seem to take ages to drop the first 1/4 of a tank then fly from 3/4 to 1/4 then slows again. i dont trust the accuracy to be honest though

Technically i still have the saff but it's in a million bits.

tabetha 24-10-2009 10:48 AM

Low power running has shown MASSIVE gains in effeciency on these engines, compared with same power level on other engines.

I owned my 3dr from 01-02 and sold it to Matt Bell. Bought it back from him last oct. In fact it must be around about now or last few days. It went from a stg1 car with me to a 400bhp bad boy :DD:

DOne less than 1k miles this yr :DD:

Sp3no 24-10-2009 03:44 PM

never had more than 240miles to a complete tank, usually its around 220. Absolute pants on fuel compared to the performance

i just cant get my head round the fact the RS does better than that!

Glenn_ 24-10-2009 04:01 PM

Lambchop 1000 miles isnt much. They need to be driven. I bet its a hand full to drive.

I know they do mate but i've had a kinda busy year. It's just nice to have one i can wheel out and use whenever i feel like it. Yes it's a handful and great fun. My saff was stg3 greens. This is approx 400 ghp and goes VERY well!
