What cheap car could beat a 996 C4S?
I'm currently hunting around for a new daily runner max budget £2100 and it got me thinking, is there anything you could buy for about £2k that would smoke a C4s as a friend has one...?

In a straight line, easy.
Anything else, no chance unless you can get a ropey Pulsar GTiR with 300bhp+, which I have seen for around that sort of price, but it'll probably blow up in no time.

if it was down back lanes involving tight turns and stuff like that my weapon of choice would be a sti version 2 impreza. the proper lightweight 5th injector type ra with plated diff and the handbrake release, seen some slightly inferior ones for 2 large.
and a 2 grander you wouldn't care about rolling it cos it would break for good money.

Impreza would get my bet, if you could find a half decent one, probably not going to get a better all rounder for that money.
Buy an 850 T-5 for about £1500 notes and spend the extra on a chip, and you could see 300bhp surely? Would probably be enough for some straight line Porsche abuse!

NOT SURE WHAT A pukka type ra does the 0-60 in,they are so light weight even the jack is made out of alloy and weighs the least i have ever felt.
would be a good match anyway under certain circumstances.

Well if it is the usual Porsche 3.6 straight 6 300 or 320 is a fucking pants amount of power so 355 sounds about right. Even with your usual Jap turbo box to do a sub 5 second 0-60 you will need 260-280bhp at the absolute minimum and assume your box, diff, clutch and tyres can relay the power down. £2k will be on the ropey end of anything turbo'd so best bet is as said above early STi or S13 180SX.

carl, there hasnt been a 911 with 300bhp since about 1970
the S models are more powerful than the non-S ones
to be honest just live with the fact the guy's got a nicer car than you, if it bothers you that much then you need to look at your own self confidence issues... lol

actually i've just doubkle-googled and i cant see any reference to the 4S making more power than the 4 on the 996!! so 320bhp might be right! (which is what the non-S ones are)

Scrap this...didn't know Porsche were getting fuck all power out of their engines
Wikipedia:
The Carrera and Carrera 4 underwent revisions for model year 2002, receiving the front headlight/indicator lights which were first seen on the Turbo version two years earlier. This allowed the 911 to be more distinguishable from the Boxster. A mildly revised front fascia was also introduced, though the basic architecture remained.
A limited number (1963)of 2004 40th Anniversary Editions include a more powerful 345-horsepower engine, a standard Porsche Stability Management system (PSM), enhanced acceleration due to a mechanical rear axle differential lock, more aggressive suspension tuning. Painted GT Silver metallic, the 40th Anniversary edition of the 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera has front air cooling openings like the Porsche 911 Turbo, body-color air intake grilles, unique sill trim and an aluminum 911 logo on the engine cover, polished 18-inch wheels, and high-gloss chromed tailpipes. Other equipment on this limited production model includes a power sunroof and bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic beam angle control and lens cleaners. Inside the 40th Anniversary 911 Carrera, dark gray leather sport seats include two-stage heating, special silver metallic and aluminum interior trim and a numbered plaque on the center console. Ref: 'Autobytel.com, 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera New Car Buyer's Guide'.
Engine wise, displacement was 3.4 L and power 300 PS (221 kW), increased in 2002 to 3.6 L and 320 PS (235 kW).
It was the 997 C4S that had a 3.8 355PS engine.

The PPC sub £1000 car challange was won last year by a Gtir. It did high 12s 1/4s, bought and sorted for under £1000.
These days you should be able to get one with 300bhp for around £2K. It won't be as ropey as you'd expect.
300bhp in a Gtir with a good driver can do sub 4s 0-60 and mid-high 12s on standard weight. My sig shows what a lightweight one can do.
PS what year 996 as there's a fair difference? (gitr should still do them both tho)

Sorry but I can't help but laugh at the "They're not that quick" comments. It's a 300bhp Porsche, it's not slow by any stretch of the imagination. It's more a case of how quick some tuned cars can be.
Come on guys lets be real about these things
