saph for 4k

I paid 4k for mine nearly 3 years ago and it's been spot on (touch wood). It needed a set-up and had a rev counter problem but once i'd sorted this it was fine. It was pretty much standard though so didn't have an flash bits on it.

Bit of a minefield TBH mate, it could have anything wrong with it, or you could be lucky and have nothing wrng with it and just be cheap. I have a 2WD that i'd let go for that kind of money but it needs a new front bumper and some paint around the arches, mechanically it'd be good though. Also depends if it's a 4x4 or RWD, i think generally your more likely to get a better 4x4 than a 2WD for that price tag.

Assume it needs a rebuild unless it's had one recently. Everything else is cheap to fix, so long as it's not properly rotten.
Ł4k is cheap for what a Sapphire Cossie is. I know it's a hackneyed expression, but they can only go up in value, or at least hold their value, so long as kept in good shape.

If i was looking at buying an old frd again weather its a mk1 escort or an escort cossie i'd buy it with the view of it being rotten and needing an engine build, i'd then have it stripped down and looked at properly. Now i aint saying there all rotten as there are some very good solid cars to be found but what i am saying is you cant tell till its to late.
From my own past experience i bought a series 1 that looked mint but turned out to be rotten through, then i had my saph which was a good solid car(but is now rotten), a fiesta turbo i didnt have long enough to make judgment on, my escort was ok, and my 3 door turned out to be an a reg on the log book but actually a ringer with a moonstone genuine 3 door shell.

The problem with buying old fords now is you can never tell if its a good one till you have paid your money and got it home. I have seen a lot of fords down at Jackos place over the last few years and even the "nice solid ones" that people have paid good money for have turned out to need some sort of welding and some degree of restoration work.

But the OP is trying to decide between a 20 year old Sierra or a 20 year old Escort.
Personally my advice to the OP is to ask himself if he wants crappy FWD or a proper car instead
A Cossie is a bloody good buy these days, especially a Sapphire.

sometimes you get very very lucky - some people are desperate to sell etc
you could look at 5 saff all priced at 4k, 3 could be dogs, 1 could be OK, & 1 could be pretty good.
buy on condition is my tip; and go through them with a fine tooth comb. Rot being high up on the list of importance.
you can still get bargains - i paid Ł1500 for my saff (in my sig) it had done a genuine 52k, but the engine was in the boot. the car was solid underneath but it had been in a prang on the wing before and repaired. i even got 2 spare heads and a spare block and 2 diffs........bargain of the century!!!

hi just bought a j plate saff for 4k - i used to own the same car in 2007 but sold it after 6months as i was driving it to the city daily. Picked it up on tuesday - mechanically its sound but paintwork could do with a tidying up (bit of laquer peeling here or there). Its a T34 build on greens etc

The problem is any cheap cossie is just not what its sold as. For instance my escos was sold to me saying it had ahmed chip.
Yeah ok lol.
Shit chip and a bleed valve, one of the reasons it drove like crap.
Ive owned different cossies for 10 years and ive never bought an expensive one, Although everyone ive had has not been what its sold as.
Thing is i now use a perfectionist tuner so i get to know all the problems no matter how small they are.
the last saff i bought i was told nothing but lies and to be fair the escos has had a few porkies told too.
will all be sorted though.
They are great cars but real money pits, you will get a much better one for 5K-6k.
Thats what i would do from now on.
Yeah ok lol.

iv just sold my genuine 346 bhp 2wd for under Ł3k
mechanically sound, jus needs the usual rust attending to and a new paint job, as well as a general tidy up!
the kick in the bollox came from it being advertisied for Ł6495 a few weeks later

And you did say it had an ahmed chip, but doesnt matter anyway it was probably just what you was told.
Thats why im saying if you do pay less then expect to spend more as the car is never what it is told to be, Im painting 90% of my escos as there wasnt one panel without a mark, chip, run, scratch or dent.
Shes getting there now though.

I went and looked at a saff on saturday, as a bloke at my work has always wanted a cossie . he said to me it just sits on this guys drive doing nothing, its taxed and has 9 months mot. so i turn up . it needs 2 rear arches ,it was stolen off his drive a year ago and found a week later while someone was grinding the numbers out the floor. anyway my advice to him was ,its a 19 year old sierra i wouldnt give him 4k .............the guy rang him last night to confirm he will except this offer. he picks it up next sat .
Oh and it has a t34 and rebuilt 5 years ago

lets be fair, nearly everyone tells a good story when selling a car, that story rarely contains any bad points unfortunately

True - just thought it was a bit of trivia you didn't know about
On the subject of cheap motors anyway, I gave Ł3500 for my first Cossie on a K plate about 5 years ago - bit of a bargain and all it needed was a front driveshaft and CV boots and it was perfect then. A cracking base for what I wanted
