Anyone got a ST220 Mondeo
Has any one on here got a st220 as I'm thinking of getting one in the near future, just after some pro's and con's if any ie whats the average mpg, how does it handle, any problems I should watch out for etc.

I used to have one. Good cars and very under-rated. Could easily lose your licence on the motorway, very refined even at high speed
Mine was low mileage so had no mechanical problems. There a bit thirsty round town, nothing drastic tho. On the motorway, great mpg, especially for a 3 litre.
Go for the face-lift with the 6 speed box, 53 or 04 plate on. They hold their money a bit better IMO.
Good Luck

Had a 53 plate one couple of years ago and loved it
Eats tyres though but thats prob due to me driving it like i stole it most of the time !!!
Fuel comsumption was not too clever but bearable considering the performance, as said above they are deceptively quick and you can be sitting at 100mph and not feel like your doing anything like that speed !!!
Only problem i ever had was the wires for the rear-most hego sensor rubbed through on the heat shield and caused all sorts of fault codes !!
Great cars and would certainly have another one but due to the high tax category i think i would have the TDCi model instead next.

ST220
I have a 56 plate one and its a very nice car.
Plenty of power and a really nice drive.
Not great 0-60 but it makes up for that once above 60.
You can be doing silly speeds with little effort.
More juicy than my ST24 but in a different league.
Get one

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I loved mine, I had an estate.
Usual Mk3 mondeo issues are rusty doors along the bottom and rear suspension bushes. Also the rear suspension set up is totally different between the estate and hatch so getting lowering kits can be harder and obviously more expensive..
Other downs are the urban MPG, (low 20's) and the £400 per year tax due to high emissions.
I'd have another tomorrow if I was in a position to.
Loads of car for your money.

I've got a 52 plate with 49k on it and love it to bits. Nothing else in the price range I'd rather have for a compromise of performance and practicality for the family.
They arent rapid of the line but as said above, once you get it motoring it goes pretty well.
Handling wise I'm well impressed for a ton and a half of car. Never experienced understeer in it but dont drive like a cock as its a fast family cruiser really. Feels really planted and can corner silly quick. If anything the back feels like it wants to come out a bit.
Fuel aint great, I average 24mpg round town, but what do you expect from a 3.0l.
Great cars inside, recaro's hold you nice, loadsa toys. Huge boot.
My only gripe is the brakes are far too small for summat that can do 150. Couple of times when i've needed to jump on em at high speed they make ya shitter twitch.
The only other thing is they dont feel as tourqey low down as the earlier st24/200's but piss all over them once wound up.

Exactly what I found. My old 330i would beat it 0-60 but the ST220 (which I have now) easily makes up for that (and more) over the next 60 mph

Mate of mine has one and he loves it.
Goes well enough, as said, it will sit at high speed very easily and is very comfortable with it. Lovely seats and his has plenty of equipment too.
Handling wise, he really rates it, it seems to deal with all sorts of hot hatches without any trouble at all, which is impressive for a big car, but he does say it can be a bit harsh down bumpy roads really.
Think his averages around 27mpg or so, which isn't too bad given the engine size.

Thanks for all the tips guy's, I will be looking for a facelift one and the fuel doesn't worry me too much as it will be replacing a V6 Omega or Alfa depending on the one I decide too get rid of, maybe both.

i have just bought one. mines a 2002 so its only 5 speed box but i got it cheap! it was a ford demo n it has sunroof, sat nav etc. i love it! its that lovely blue 2! i need a big car for my newborn babies huge pram. i had bought a merc e-class n tbh its a waste having 8-9k in a car that will devalue quick and i dont love that much that i even put through carwash if i ever bother to wash it.
i got the mondeo cheap and once i sell my merc id rather have the extra in the bank at the moment!
mine doesnt seem too thirst but i normaly compare to the cosworth. i could do with a new front bumper tho if anyone knows anywhere that has one cheap?!

I've got a Mondeo ST TDCI, and the only issue I've ever had with the car is the wheels and tyres, which are the same as the ST220.
They wear quite heavily and I've had mine 2 years now and all the time I've had it I've had problems with the tyres sealing to the rims. I've now had 2 blowouts at high speed, the last one on Thursday night. I've even bought a compressor now because they need watching and pumping up so often. I've had them all resealed several times, and had new valves put in them all several times but it seems to make absolutely no difference.
Someone who used to work for Ford told me the other day that this was always an issue with them and a lot came back under warranty because of this exact issue.
Apart from that I can't fault it and it's the best driving car I've ever had. Because I'm not heavy footed I'm averaging nearly 50mpg in mine.
If you're thinking of the ST220 I would strongly advise you looking at the TDCI, because they're identical in looks, they're very torquey, they have loads of kit and are massively more economical and I guess significantly cheaper to insure than the 220. And my road tax only costs me £150 a year for a 2.2 turbo diesel motor.

I wouldn't put 19s on it mate, 18s are just the right size. It's obviously been built with 18s in mind because the ride is brilliant, stable and really comfortable but handles really well for a big car too. I put 19s on my last Cossie but I wouldn't do it again. They looked great when it was stood still but it definitely wasn't as good on the move.
If you're thinking of the ST220 then I would definitely try an ST TDCI as well, I think you'll be surprised how good it is, and I average between 45 and 50 mpg in mine, which you certainly won't get from an ST220.

I 2 have the st tdci, the only problem I had with it was tracking, its easy to knock out if you ride speed bumps wrong!, they tend to rub the inside edge of the front tyres...got the tracking sorted + fitted a full set of falken fk 452's and the cars been amazing since, torquey, economical and plenty of streight line speed!...admitedly its not too quick off the mark but its spot on when it matters!...go for tyres with a softer side wall (like the falken) and the ride is firm but extremely comfortable, with plenty grip be it wet or dry!
i do allot of miles so the tdci is ideal! however if mileage is not an issue, get the 220..horses for corses etc but the tdci for me is the best all rounder! (although i would have a 220 if i worked at home)

But to be honest I wouldn't swap it for an ST220, because it does everything so well and with excellent economy.

Ive had my 53 plate 6 speeder for just over a year now,
Averages around 26 mpg.
Its now done 106k, bought it on 88k.
Things I've had to replace, Starter motor, 2 sets of front tyres ( Goodyear F1's lastest 16k)
Next weekend its going in because the slave cylinder has gone( gearbox out job ).
Road tax is £210 iirc for 12 months.
I love it to bits, even took it around Castle Combe the other month, such a well balanced car considering its size.
I'd reccommend one to anybody
