Default PC Hard Drive question Sata/IDE

I've bought a Sata drive for a PC that I am sorting out, but I've just pulled the cover off and there are no Sata ports on the motherboard, only IDE.

Can this be adapted somehow for not too much money?

I did the same, you can get the leads at PC world type places

I nearly punched the geek in the shop though, I got a smug grin off the twat for not knowing there are different kinds

you will loose speed on the hdd doing it that way
i would bought a sata controller, can get a 2 port one for 10-20Ł
connected to the pci port.

though if speed it not a problem... sure do it that way....i wouldent though=)

Would I be better just to try and send this Sata drive back and get the right one?

SATA drives do offer faster transfer speeds. You could get a PCI controller, or simply send it back and get an IDe one.

This isn't my PC, it's my mothers. It's a Compaq with a 2.8ghz Celeron processor.

No, if your motherboard doesnt have SATA to begin with, it certainly wont have PCI-E

true true, I was on the page at the time..

only thing to watch out for on the amazon is the fact its not sold by amazon themselves - from experience postage can be quite expensive

Christian - I had this trouble when i had to buy a new PC for my mum. All new PC's nowadays come with SATA's not IDE's

Instead of piss arsing around with motehrboards n wires etc i just got an external case package.

Then inserted the old drive plugged it in the USB port and volia all done.. Was a piece of cake

Was a tenner off e-bay

RS500/364 - Thanks for that. It is only 1.5gb/s, the one I linked to (although I know its no good) is 3.0gb/s, do I need to be concerned with that?

Also, I think this is the same as the one you linked to??

it always ammuses me people thinking sata HDDs are faster than IDE HDD

the BUS speed is higher, ie the theoretical max transfer rate per channel. it still cant make the disk physically pull the data off the heads any faster

IDE ATA133 has a 133mbit/sec BUS
SATA2 has a 300mbit.sec BUS

a normal HDD with be able to pull about 70mb/sec of it it max

even the fastest "normal" Hdd on the market, the velociraptor tops out at about 120mb/sec

so, how does SATA make it faster?

and in my opinion just take it back and swap it, its the least hassle
