Ive run 245 on 10s and im running 225 on 9s both could take a wider tyre but im limited on sizes with 15s

9.5 inches is about 237mm. so the nearest tyre would be a 235.
i have a 9.5J rims and i run a 235front and a 255rear.

i will need a little bit of curve on the sidewall to ensure clearance so dont want to go too wide

If your concerned about clearance surely a 35 profile would be a better bet than 40 ?

not overly concerned as the arches will be rolled back & the plastic trimmed away as much as possible. i think i would be buying more rim spares with 35s given our roads over here
