Default fao bernie@ cts or any other knowledgable transmission peeps

im gonn agive you a scenario , and i would like the outcome if poss

and i dont want answers like BOOM etc etc i wanna know whats gonna fail and when ok

were talkin 4x4 transmission and diff ratios, if i was to run a rear (cosworth 4x4 btw) ratio of 4.27:1 and a front of 3.9:1 whats gonna happen , how will the car drive and for how long ??

i suspect centre diff failure, but how long will it last and is there any way to prolong its life ?

or to put it a little closer , rear of 3.58:1 and a front of 3.62/3.64:1 ? same again please

or 3.77:1 rear 3.62 front

is it possible to mismatch by such small amounts and expect to get away with it even slightly ??

A small amount won't cause the center VC much issue as you talking the differences between worn and new tyres. A large amount and it will hate it, the center VC is basically trying to equalise the difference between the front and rear so will not like a large difference, the bigger the difference the faster you'll burn the thing out .

However from what I remember ford had various options for playing around with the chain that was either to allowed you to run different diff combniations / or it was to change the torque split, it might have even done both. I can't remember I'm sure berni would know.

Not much help I know but you can get away with running a 2wd rear diff of 3.64 and a 3.62 4x4 front without problems.

Couldn't you vary tyre sizes front to rear to help out try to get the rolling raduis's closer together?

I remember talking to Bernie about this. He reckons that the centre VC can handle a 10% difference between front and rear without any real problems.

the problem then is sean having to buy loads of diff sized rubber

hmmm 10% on that theory i would be ok with the units i want to run as that would make me 8 % out might be worth a go !!

no you cant adjust the power split by the diff ratios , it aint poss for longevity, and sierra diffs and there ratios are shit hence why i dont run sierra diffs .
