Its something to do with the way the speed builds on the rollers.

A longer rate should put more load on the car.

Some rollers are capable of holding the speed steady regardless of amount of power or throttle position, they do this then, then with another control let the rollers go so the speed power builds, this is what I understand it to be, that's what is done on mine anyway.
So in essence the rate at which it is allowed to accelerate.

As above, its the amount of resistance to change in rpm that the rollers exert basically.

Essentially think of it is like change the angle of a hill and how that would effect the speed at which you pull through a gear.

cool thanks for replies so a higher ramp rate will put more load on the engine by more resistance on the rollers.

I suppose swapping the word ramp for hill explains it better.
