sideways all the way!
around 5hrs each way give or take half hour id say.
it takes me 4hrs to get from chipstead in surrey to sheffield, and durhams about 2hrs further up the a1 from there, thats in a lorry so 5hrs ish shouldnt be far off in a car.

Where abouts in London ? I went to Tunstall last bank holiday (Sunderland) which is only a few miles from Durham. I live in Harlow (J7,M11) and it took me 4˝ hours in a little 1.4 Rover. The quickest I've done it is 3ź hours (in a Renault Scenic, so nothing speedy). My trip was 257miles if that helps

You'd do that in a day easy. I picked up an engine from blackpool once in an old renault 5 van thing, took 6 hours each way, and that was having to stop every half an hour to pump up a tyre that had a thorn in it and to fill up the radiator that had a hole!
Left early in the morning, was there by lunch time, and was home for dinner.

Go on the train. Seemples
Probably cost you less for an off peak return booked in advance than it would in petrol and no traffic hold ups.
Get the bloke to meet you at the station, job done.

like pete says all depends on what time of day, traffic, and where you start from. I live in Newton Aycliffe and drove to brighton last year in 5hrs in a little pug 106 1.1 but that was in late evening and only stopping once for 15 mins to stretch my legs
