Cruise control.........
How does it work? On a petrol car i take it the throttle bodie must have a motor on it and the computer tells it how much to open/close etc and the same on a derv but but a motor on the pump to tell it how much to pump etc?

its more common as std fitment on newer cars as a lot are going to CAN bus networks (basically drive by wire) so there is no mechincal link between the driver and car - the acceleratpr for example will have a sensor to tell the ecu how much its been pressed, the ecu will then control the throttle body by either a motor or servo so the ecu could potentially drive the car itself

Rhys I have looked into this myself, may do it soon on my S2....
Basicly, Id have 2 throttles . One would be hidden up behind the dash, connected to the cable......(for pedal feel essentially). The TPS reading from this would then go into a little control box (wont be hard to write a PIC to do it), and then sends the output to a stepper motor mounted on the actual throttle body, ie, TPS says 50%, so motor moves to 50%.
You'd then have a button on it, so it "holds" the value for cruise control.
Can also add fancy adjusters into the software if you wish to maintain SPEED on yourcruise control, rather than justa throttle setting, by using the VSS sensors etc.
Crude maybe as it still uses a second TB and cable....but IMO easier than fucking about trying to find a "fly by wire" cable-less throttle pedal!.

fookin ell talk about makein a big job out of it
you can buy cable operated units that just pull the top of the throttle pedal or move the butterfly lever arm of your std throttle body , a bit of wiring and and a switch setup , and there it is , cruise control , takes approx 3 hours to fit , and are very cheap
