bringing a southern irish car to north ireland whats involved

TBH, I think it will be very costly.
I'm almost sure once registered here, VAT will have to be paid....in much the same way VRT gets extorted from you guys when the reverse happens.
You would get a new plate issued when its been fully "imported" to the UK/DVLNI system

I recently brought a car from the south and registered it.
You will need a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer as it will be classed as an import. The cert is about Ł80. There should be no vat to pay as tax would have been paid when the car was new. You need to get it mot'd using the chassis number.
Get a form from the dvla, fill it in, take the mot and conformity cert, pay the dvla Ł80 registration fee, plus six months tax fee, then a few days later they will issue a numberplate, a tax disc, and paperwork to get the new plates made up. A few weeks later the log book turns up with you being the first registered keeper.
Your biggest hassle may well be insuring the car using just the chassis number.
Also cars from northern ireland to the uk and vice versa, no longer get the plates changed.
