for a proper rally wheel he must have hit a big rock or something for that to happen.

Yea, I saw that before on an Evo fitted with Rota Wheels... wont have the picture on this computer, but IIRC it was a dark grey Evo 8 with Rota P1 Alloys.

Only personal experience of snapped alloy wheels was back when I was 17 and a Shitroen AX GT drove into the side of my Mondeo at 80 mph and snapped my 16" 'Cossie' Style wheel clean in two. The bastard.

Cheers,
Grant

Saw a V8 Sunbeam Tiger properly flying round Donington at a track day, was eating everything in sight. Toward the end of the day he was flat out down the backstraight. When he hit the brakes both front discs shattered and sheered all the spokes off the Minilites. No brakes and no steering! Luckily it went off down towards the Melborne Loop and didn't hit anything.

The pieces of brake disc just sat there melting into the Tarmac.

Worst thing was that the driver knew that his discs were cracked before he even went out on track.

i've seen quite a few like that, but normally they've hit something "big" and the wheel has shattered and the spokes have been binned

or the wheel outer bit has come off and is seperated from the rest of the car

Si-B had a VERY near one of those at the Nurburgring the other year on his lime green wheels - he heard a clicking when cornering and when checked a few of the spokes had cracked and the rim of the wheel had started to dislodge itself from the spokes

Yep that was a lucky break, thankfully not literally!

These wheels:

That had these small cracks on most of the spokes, only visible from inside the wheel:

And when laid flat down on their face, the wheels that were affected looked a little different from the one's that weren't:

The whole centre of the wheel / hub had pushed out a few mm. Was a disaster waiting to happen. And on the Ring as well

This was how lucky we were - I was in the que to go back on to the Ring when the track shut for an accident. We had to turn round in the que, and go back to the car park. When turning I heard a weird click or creaking noise from what I thought were the brakes.

So after looking over the car from the outside and seeing nothing, I took the wheels off to look at the brake disks. It was then I noticed 2 wheels with the hubs sitting proud of the car - looked like a weird offset issue

Took the wheels off, saw the cracks and soiled myself.

10 mins earlier I was in the que with Rick, his girlfriend and his mate. 4 up, about to blast the Ring one last time. Would deffo have been the last time if we had gone out

Makes me glad I've still got the old pikey steels fitted.

Hit something with them and you have to replace a tyre and take a hammer to the lip. Job Done.

I remeber people mentioning issues with 'Rota' wheels. Saw another photo with one where the hub section had actually twisted "axially?" stretching the spokes with it. Fuck getting skinny spoked wheels.

....found the pic:

Ok guys i've quoted what i've said so it can be explained in leymans terms

There we go i've even highligted the rest of the sentence that both of you needed to read, I've said don't buy cheap wheels or don't hit something. I'm under the assumtion that comps don't just break so the only wheels that have are the cheapo ones - HTFH

C'mon fuzzy surely your comps didn't just shatter whilst driving down the road? didn't the crash break them?

Alan, you're spot on in my case.

£110 for my wheels, with tyres! I sold the tyres for £100 on the Mitsubishi site, and so my wheels then owed me a tenner

Cost me £200 to have them blasted and powder coated. They broke after 1 Combe track day and maybe 6 laps of the Ring - so they started out cheap, then cost me a fair bit, then nearly killed me.

Ebay specials indeed.

mine broke whilst spinning around and around 3 or 4 full turns on the road after losing control at very high speed.the car bounced of the central reservation a few times but that was body damage.i suppose theres a lot of stresses on a wheel when your going sideways at 90 one way then you stop instantly and spin around with a 225 wide good tyre on a road surface..
