What would you do?
Thinking about changing my st170. Not because its a bad car, but I just fancy a change, something that looks, sounds and goes a bit more.
I would like a focus ST, however that would mean £6-7k + my car to trade in which to be honest I can't really afford as I'm getting married next year.
So i thought about straying from ford for about 18 months and get a civic type R, which I could get, similar age and mileage to my car for maybe an extra grand for a minter. I would eventually chop this in for an ST when I can afford it, 18 months to a couple of years down the line.
But would it be worth it? If i got a civic, I know its always gonna be half way house between my st170 and an ST, so maybe I won't be particularly pleased with it. Or should I get myself in a few grands of debt with a loan and just get an ST (which to be honest I dont want to do, would rather save for it), or should I just slum it in my st170 for a couple more years (In which time it is going to need a clutch, possibly dual mass at the same time and a cambelt).
Thoughts/opinions guys?

Don't you have to rev the shiz out of civics to make them go?
I know that would annoy me, being used to more 'basic' low-reving ford engineering.
I'm probably wrong, never driven a Type-R one.

Just like an ST170 you mean??
The CTR will be way more than half way between the two Focai mate, it'll be an absolute hoot to drive on twisties and will probably only really annoy you if you try and increase performance.. as basic maps etc cost a fair amount and dont yield big gains.
I love driving my sisters Civic TypeR Premier, have a blast in one and see what you think though. The potential for big bills on the Focus would also make me look around at changing as you're throwing the money away on repairs which wont increase the cars overall value.
Cheers,
Grant

get the loan and get the ST. its what makes the world go round. CTR is a great car but nowhere near the class, comfort, looks and tuning potential of an ST.

not really no unless you want to go flat out in which case you would have to do this in any car,
i couldn't decide between the CTR and ST but in the end went for the CTR never looked back really

I personally liked them more than the st170, and as you can't afford the ST yet, why not give it a year in the CTR, it's only a car so if you don't like it sell it - you'll like it.
You'll be looking at 5 - 6k for a decent car with around 60 - 80k on the clock and full dealer history. They have actually gone up in price in the last few months (after I sold mine - doh!) plenty of sub 5k ctr's about but be wary - most are iffy cars and you don't want that.
It's a car I would suggest everyone owns at one time or another, I was a ford man through and through but was impressed with the CTR, so much that to present day it is the car I owned the longest at 2 years and only got sold as I really needed something a little more modern inside.
Pick up a clean one for around 5.5k with full history and average miles and you wont go far wrong mate.

IF you can afford the loan, and you are quite happy in the knowledge that your job is safe, then buy the ST. Stuff happens mate, and you never know what tomorrow may bring. NO, I am not saying get a huge debt, I am just saying that 8 grand on finance, if affordable to you, is not something to worry over.
You could save, but how long would it take? If it takes two years or so then who knows what may take your fancy then?
Go for it ( I say this as I am also thinking about an orange ST, but I really do like my P38 Vogue for the comfort)

Cheers all for the replies!
Only thing that makes me a bit reluctant about the ctr is that the driving position in my mum's 1.6 civic is awful in my opinion. Not enough adjustment on the steering wheel and it feels a bit flimsy inside. Not too sure how different the type r is tho!
I could afford a loan plenty easy enough, but its just the thought of being in debt over a car that I don't like. I used to be in a bit of debt when I was younger and it took me ages and a lot of hard work to get out of it, just don't fancy going down that road again
Cheers matt for all the info, might go have a look at a couple at the weekend and see what I think. There's an ST at the ford garage down the road as well, might go have a poke around it too Pretty sure getting rid of the 170 soonish would be a good idea, as I will be needing to spend a fair few hundred on it for clutches and cambelts etc in the next 6 months or so.
Decisions decisions eh!
Cheers
