Engine prices - How much was yours??
After reading countless thread on engines costing £1,000`s that i would start a happy thread to show people you can build on a budget.
I built a full zetec turbo, frs pistons and rods, new valve stem oil seals, cam shaft oil seals, valves reseated, rebuilt bottom end shells ect frs valve springs inc buying the engine only stood me at £350 - thx to a bit of bit of ebaying and asking for bits on fourums
Also bid a 2.1 zvh with forged ex pistons for £350
Granted i did all the work my self but it dose not always have to cost the earth.
You guys must have some good experieces on a cheep build??

There should be a pound per power figure here mate cos it's all well and good saying an engine cost £20 but what power does it make?
i'e the 500bhp 5k engine above is
£10 per bhp! lol
Mine is summat like 4k for 240 bhp so thats 4000/240 = £16.66 PBHP
(per brake horse power)

well I think I can win on Brake per pound :lol
standard DOHC into CVH azura with induction kit and bits I had lieing around
Total cost for engine conversion: £100 including gearbox / propshaft
and at 125bhp standard thats 80p per BHP
Albeit the rebuild was just a check and replace anything in bad condition

I purchased my YB engine for a crazy steal, it had a fully worked head with good thickness and completely std 200 block 4x4. The crank was perfect as were all of the other engine components on strip down. I bought full 4x4 engine with t3 turbo, L8 ecu and loom for £1750 then sold off the turbo, management/loom for approx £500 so I got a cracking engine for £1250.
The £1250 engine was then built up using a metal gasket and some low comp pistons and new rings, block bored and honed plus a big wing sump, shells etc.. and some cams..... The engine build I would have put a value of 2.5k on and I would consider to be suitable for a good 480bhp with the right ancillaries. Total so far £3750
Add a roller T4 @ 1k, management 1k+ and a few other bits and bobs £250 and it comes in at around £6k ready to drop in to my car.
So £6000/480 = £12.5 per bhp
But if this is going to work on a good comparison basis we need to figure out if your including turbos and management to the mix. Without turbo/management and a few other bits I make my build total around £3750 which gives £7.81 per bhp
Mine is not exactly cheap but I wanted a good strong setup thats why I've spent/planning on buying the right kit to go with the lump. There will probably be a consensus that below a certain figure on certain engines its pretty cheap to tune...whereas eeking out 10/20bhp from some of the most tuned engines requires a fair amount of dollars more.
Cheers
Dan

cos you can give them death 24/7 without worrying about how much the next rebuild will cost, then take mum to the shops in a nice smooth running car, then when you drop her off, go and give it death again. ok they're not tunable like the YB, but for an easy 200+ track or every day toy they are ace.
i wouldn't touch a YB with a barge pole, can't afford the rebuilds

i work on my own cars lol. and yeah, im gunna stay jap with all my high power stuf but for the sake of a fast ford that usable i dont think the 24v is beatable. makes the oldschool noise and as bj928 said u can rag them everyday and no rebuild in sight. i have a mate hu has one with 260,000 miles on it and its never had a bottom end rebuild. and u can tune the 24v up to silly power and im not convinced it costs more. standard internals can take 500bhp

Well I work on my cars, just not engine building side of things..
Dont forget to handle the power you have to buy the transmission to cope.. I went for a quaife diff and quaife box, Not only fo you have to handle the power you have no be able to stop.. Ap 6 pots up front and Ap 4 pots rear..
Not only do you build an expensive engine you have to buy equipment to monitor the engine.. Defi Gauges, controller etc..
NEver Ending

my viper engine owes me about £7200 including all shipping, customs and remapped brand new ECU, engine done about 600miles in the viper, is good for another 200,000+ before rebuild and should be 550+ hp 575Ib/ft+, oh yer, got a t56 viper 6 speed in that price as well.

yeh that is cheep power for the money but i have seen what you are putting it in and if i wanted to die id do it even cheeper than that and jump infront of a bus lol
for me best power for money is an ls1 as you get one delivered from the states for about £2500 and with cams you can get 600bhp and turboed it will do over 1000

12k for a 550+ bhp car isnt to bad, at least you dont have depreciation like a new car.

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
My 480cc Supermoto Engine is up at about $4000NZD which is probably a bit over a thousand pounds just now, see about 55bhp.
The shit old BMW 530 I just bought to wreck cost less than a quarter of that and has over 200bhp hahaha

I spent over 7k on my rst and got the figures in my sig.
That was with NMS doing it, brand new cossie management and all the work involved. New engine from bottom to top, mapped the lot.
Then I sold it in bits

PassionFord Post Whore!!
my first engine rebuild cost 2k it has done countless track days , the ring and pleanty of hammer.
After 4 years it is now a little tired, and i have took it out this week.
I will now be trying to get my new engine in for National day, its is part way there and should see the large side of 500+ when done , it stands me at in excess of 5k now, with more to come .
But a good engine dont have to be big bhp, my 2k engine was 340-360bhp and gave pleanty of fun
