Question for Porsche people
I was having a discusion with a mate, I said that this 911 we saw was a 993 and he don't be a t**t thats a 911 and went ye a 993 is spec of 911.
Now am I right?
I wasn't completely sure, you can get 996's as well?
Whats the differences on a 993 and a 996?
Cheers Rich

993 isn't the spec, its the mark or body type,
993 is 2 models old, 996 came after and 997 is currently in production but they are all 911's.
e.g. golf (911) mk1(993), golf(911) mk2(996), etc etc if that makes sense....

i'm not too sure on the differences between them all but yea i think it's time for your mate to eat humble pie .
they all have different model numbers like the bmw's e30-e36-ect, that why clarkson always has a moan about how hard the porsche models are to tell apart.
i'm sure someone will come along and be more descriptive but you get the jist

im sure that was a 965 ( but classed as a 964 just the porsche turbo part numbers start 965)
993 is the last of the aircooled porsche engines, but has a new body style with headlamps angled back is the more noticable difference
996 is after that they changed to water cooled and totally redesigned the cars to bring up to date , then headlamps and indicators are now made one peice instead of mounted in the bumpers
the 997 is the current range,,,,now has similer angled headlamps and bumper mounted indicators again like the 993 style of before so back to more retro looks yet not too much beetle looking
964 was the last of the classic porsche cars that shared the same main body metal panels from when they first made the "911" series, they generally changed cosmetics like bumpers, ect to bring it upto date
911 is a model name just like boxster, caymen, escort, sierra ect
993 is the chassis type such as mk3 mk4 mk5 ect and is part of the actual chassis number
also the turbo versions tend to have wider front and rear fenders/wings though the 996 carrera 4s is non turbo but does have the wider arches as the turbo,,,,,,, not only that but the carrera 4s also has turbo brakes, suspension and all other turbo hardware apart from the engine
hope that helps answer the questions

porkie its called a 965 cause all the part numbers for the turbo parts start with part number 965,,,,,, ive had a large debate about this with the guys i work with and companys such as design 911 ect ect and they all call them 965,,,,,, its anoying as they are sort of right apart from the chassis number aint 965 !!!
though nobody at a porsche place will listen to a cocky know it all whos new to the job when these guys have over 20 years experience of porsches and i own a renault clio pmsl

not with there engine issues you wont mate,,,, 4k to rebuild and they have a nasty habit of spining shells too,,,,,,, i have a list of part numbers of all the parts needed for the 3.4 rebuilds to save me looking it all up on pet,,,,,, its not ment to be as bad on the 3.6 though

are you not paying attention
thats a porsche 930 NOT a 911,,, the 911 is the RANGE/Design of the car,,, all of em are 911's,,,,,,,,,, they was ment to be called 901's but peugeot own the patent for all cars with 0 in the middle hence there called 911 instead
this is a 993 TURBO,,,,, see how its not the one from bad boys

930 = approx 1974 to 1989 - TURBO - 270, 300 & 330 bhp through its life.
911 (As pictured) = approx 1964 to 1989 - NON TURBO - 130 (2L) to 231 (3.2) bhp
Then came your other, later varients - 964, (dare I say ) 965 ('Turbo 2' - the bad boy car), etc ...

Its a GT3... the engine is TOTALLY different to the M96 engine in Carreras and Boxsters. They use the same GT1 block as the Turbo and the GT2....
BOMBPROOF.

The one pictured doesn't have ANY of those problems!!! nor does it have RMS problems or liner problems or intermediate shaft problems or anything that effects the M96 engines.

They sound quite 'mechanical' untill warm. I was allowed a small (low speed ) drive - soooo so nice ...

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
I have been having an argument with my brother, he says Turbo. Same with RS4's he prefers the 2.7tt ones and I would have the 8000rpm V8 thanks. I am the older brother by 6 years too...

............
I guess TVRs must be shit as well then, the amount of engine parts that are sold for them
The 964 Carerra RS basic is now 17 years old so it's hardly surprising you see lots of parts for a 17 year old performance car is it?
Whats more surprising is that you sell 'lots' of parts seeing as the run was limited to 2282 cars worldwide ( less than 3.6% or all 964 production ) Must mean a lot of them are still being used, which is pretty good for a 17 year old performance car.
