I was in the same boat with my cossie, sold it and bought a golf VR6 thinking the same as you but after a few months of the golf its now up for sale as i want another cossie.

get yourself a vauxhall, ive got a 1997 astravan with 205000 miles on it and it still runs smooth as new with very little rust...

or get an older bmw. generally the only parts that gave me problems over the years were the ford bits id fitted.
