mind you, having reread the article, it's fairly clear that the marine fella get's his marching orders and gordon wants nothing more to do with it, and the mail have made it out like he's chickened out of fisticuffs because he was "scared"

That is 100% set up, pretty much all the stuff Ramsay does across the pond is. If you watch kitchen nightmares USA at the start there's a disclaimer saying that certain events have been pre-scripted for the show. I would imagine this is exactly the same thing.
