Jay,

Go for the Montana 6 tent with the extra front porch,

We go to the Glen Nevis camp site in Fort William ( highlands of Scotland) or to the New Forest in Hampshire.

depends what you want really, whether you want in-land or coastal....

Not too far away North Wales there are some stunning places to go, I recommend Abersoch for a small town with a few good pubs and a stunning beach or three.... some really nice sites in the area too.

We just got back from our first camping trip as a family. Was cracking mate.
Only reason we said we would try it is that my daughter goes with CUBS and she obviously has all the stuff she needs already so we didn't need much to have a go just a couple of sleeping bags and some stoves really we had a lot of stuff already. We'll probably have a normal holiday and go camping 2/3 times a year.
We went somewhere within 2 hours of home just incase we wanted to go home. We had one really rough night with strong winds and torrential rain as we were on a cliff top.
Some really sad types spend all their time at their tents but i cooked breakfast and we ate out the rest of the time. One bit of advice is to get a good windbreak as it canes the gas and takes forever to boil your kettle if its blowing the stove.
We borrowed a tent this time but we'll get out own now. There are 4 of us and we are getting a 6berth with seperate bedrooms as the one we borrowed only had 2 rooms and we spent all the time moving our stuff around and folding up chairs etc... so the extra space would make a big difference.
Someone recommended joining the Caravan and camping club too its about Ł36 per year and they offer discounts on sites and have their own sites. If you can live without anything electrical non serviced pitches are around Ł15per night.
I was surprised at the cross section of people at the site we were at i expected it to be the typical outdoors types, i think it does help though if you don't just want to stay on the site all the time.

We stayed here not a lot in the immediate area but a good base for other places http://www.woodhill-park.com/ not sure how far it is for you but we can recommend it, everything was tidy and the showers/toilets were spotless.

I've heard the frogs are really geared up for camping. You can even do these hols where you book it all and you just turn up to the site and its all pitched and ready for you with everything included.

Best trip I ever did was a road trip to spain camping. Stopped off in france for a couple of nights. You just jump in and drive until you can't be bothered, pitch up, stay for as long as you like and then move on to somewhere else. Total freedom. And cheap too

The whole point of camping is to DIY not pay someone to put up your tent

Got a club on there, loads of kids there, and Scousers so it be like home from home
By the looks of it the kids were having a great time, great enough where I fucked off into the village boozer for a quiet beer
Plus its a couple of hours from home should it turn shit.

Camping is great apart from: no bed, no proper food, no bathroom etc.

Just great.

(I'm not a fan as you have guessed)

Eurocamp and the like do that, I worked for them over there in 95.
Everything is in there for you, but it aint fecking cheap.

Best bet is to get yourself a decent tent for a couple of hundred quid and try it, if you dont like it Ebay the thing,
Tenting is serious business now though, flatscreen TV's and all that shit now, not like the good old days of a torch and and a 1 ring camping gaz stove

Ah yes the arguments with the mrs over pitching the tent just wouldn't be the same!!!

The french sites are supposed to be very good though.
As i understand it as mentioned above the eurocamp thing is pricey, i just mentioned it thats all, but i'd not do it, its just not the same.

I really don't get the whole "luxuries" thing either why go away to sit in your tent watching telly and spend all the time cooking you could stay at home for that!! I liked getting up and making breakfast but fuck cooking on a small gas stove for dinner...

People are diffrent though, and its also a case of 1 upmanship, having Satellite TV in your tent must earn big kudos points.
I go on the bike so everything is minimal, I dont cook as stove etc is extra gear, just me, 3 man tent so theres enough room for my bike gear in it, spare pair o grunderpants and a toothbrush.

My humble abode, and behind it some mansion.

Most sites have a wash block anyway so its not as if your gonna be a complete tramp.

Big G, just what i've always wanted to do. Me and the Mrs on a bike with just a change of clothes and a small tent. However until the kids are older we have to take all the associated shite that comes with having a family in tow!!
Doesn't matter what size your tent is or what toys you've got. We're all the same first thing in the morning on the walk of shame to the shower block towel and wash bag in hand

We have to use our childcare points with the 'rents very wisely!
We'll wait for a few more years until we can escape for any real length of time without them.
