Default monoblock cossie

something karl just posted just reminded me of a thought i had a couple of nights ago.

back in the days of turbo'ed f1 cars, they used to run monoblock engines where effectively the 'head' and 'block' are all one piece. the advantage being that there is no gasket to blow out.

due to advances in casting and machining technology and prototyping techniques, i wonder if it must now be possible to create a monoblock engine that could, for example, be fitted with yb components like crank, rods, pistons, camshafts, valve gear etc.

the advantage would be a reliable engine capable of higher dynamic pressure ratio's (either a higher static c/r, or more boost) for a longer time than the normal engine.

cost would probably be massive, and i don't know if it would be possible to install normal valves in the confined space or whatever.

that's just a few of my thoughts. anyone else got any on this subject? is it impossible, impractical, or just too expensive?

Too expensive, and to be honest, if you are going to start doing that sort of thing you would be better off building a decent rotary motor instead!
