government scrappage more like classic car killer
My friend and I went to a vw spares repairs place today.
This arrived at their place and it was on agreement it never touches the road again and is broken up for parts. Ok its not an old school ford but its an absolutely mint mk2 gti.
the old bosch k jet, with mfa, so shows mpg oil temp etc etc.
I couldnt believe it my mate and I tried to save it but they wouldnt have none of it,
Just wonder how many classic cars will get caught in this spider web.. Like for example an old boy has owned a mk3 xr3 with clover leaf wheels. He dies and the family are left with it,
They have no idea of how much cars are worth or the rarity of certain models.
So they assume its just an old banger and the car gets taken away by the government scrappage scheme. And the family get a kia picanto which will shit itself in a few years.

yer i raced one at the lights in mine,,, and my fuse for my fuel pump popped.. and i was left looking stupid whilst he drove off. The new one has styling influences from a lot of cars,, like divic type -r / astra back end etc. But for the money they are a better car for the money than the golf gti.

many, and I would imagine it may make getting cheap old 1 - 2k runners difficult.
At the end of the day, someone will chop their old motor/classic in if it isn't worth upto or over 2k, less hassle.
I suppose the upside is that if they can break them then at least more parts will be around, the down side is lots of classics will be lost for ever.

That version of the Scirocco is no great loss - I had one of the original cars and loved it, then that Mk2 came out and I hated it.
When the Corrado came along, it was a real return to form for VW.
The new Scirocco looked good to begin with but I think I've cooled on it since then.

The way i see it is, in years to come we will look back on this scrap crap. And regret it big time.
Funny thing is people think they are getting two grand for there old cars. if you walk into any car dealer and say you want to buy a new car watch they take at least 2k off straight away.

We nearly had a full scale riot on the MMOC when one minor owner posted the threat in his for sale ad "If you dont buy my car I'm gonna scrap it for the 2 grand".
One of the car manufacturers published a list of what they got in - lots of them were 'classics'. MGs and the like..
Rumour had it some places were breaking the cars - or moving them onto specialist breakers so not all is lost.

I wish my local scrap yard would get something like an Xr3 / 1600i in, i'd be in there and strip it to bare metal ! yup, i'd take the flippin paint too ! The one thing i did notice in our scrappy was a 97 mondeo 2ltr ghia - fully loaded, 34k on the clock ! if it wasn't a mk2 i'd have stripped a few bits off it for my mondyohno too

I seen a car trnsporter the other day on the A1 near whetherby full of older cars, one of the was a real nice looking mk1 capri.
Hope it was just getting moved rather than scrapped.

I popped into a dealership where I used to work last week and they have a MINT 42k mile 1 owner F plate XR3i in red. Apparently was the blokes pride and joy but is getting on now and chopped it in to be scrapped against a 1.6D Volvo S40
I tried for half an hour with the sales manager and the DP but no joy
Thing is Im sure they are going to try and fiddle keeping it cos all the other scrappage cars get collected and took away on a wagon but this has been kept on site for the past 3 collections.

Ł1000 of the deal comes from the dealer and/or the manufacturer.
The other Ł1000 comes from the Government. The dealer has to complete a declaration then provide the certificate of destruction to get the government share (and the manufacturer share if applicable.)
If you can get them to confirm that the non-government part was discount that would have been given anyway, and offer Ł1000 for the car in lieu of the government money they would be no worse off and they might sell it to you. Failing that, a Ł2k offer should do it, but it will kind of depend how far down the admin trail they are.

the whole point of this deal is to get the old shit off the road and get the new on. be it classic or not its old shit compared to new cars in the eyes of business and government.
cant see a problem. just make sure its not your "classic" car or if u know someone who is chopping there car in give them Ł2k

My wife was telling me the other day that she was speaking to a salesman and he said that it's unbeleiveable the amount of classic cars coming out the woodworm to be scrapped!
That salesman has bought numberous himself already and has sold on them to be either restored or driven, as he couldn't bare seening such good condition cars go to scrap. She mentioned cars such as a Triumph and an Austin.

Fast Ford snapper
Sickening to see the cars that are pointlessly killed off in this crazy scheme
As said before, huge discounts are possible on new cars without resorting to the needless scapping all sorts from the mundane serviceable examples to rare and interesting classics

And above all, the cynical manipulating bastards behind this all, the ones that told us cars were BAD and us naughty drivers must be taxed and taxed and encouraged NOT to use cars - we had the government ramming this down our throats until a few months ago - suddenly cars are GOOD and we must all buy more of them!
FFS, rant over.

There was a MINT black E plater XR3i in the scrap yard besiide me, its still there but all the good bits are gone now, it had no rust anywhere, total waste of a good shell but thats just the way it goes i guess. Beside that there was this 1960's thing, possibly a triumph or something, it was also totally mint and complete, i had a good look over it and i was amazed how good a condition it was in.

I think it is sacralidge that so many perfectly good, some low mileage/classic/rare cars are being scrapped for no reason.
It'll end up with a lack of affordable used cars, no one will be able to find 'cheap' 'runarounds'.
