Ripped off by a mate??

Following on from my post of what would you do for a mate, have any of you been ripped off by a mate? If so what for? What happened as a result of being ripped off?

RST 15-07-2009 08:29 PM

Well i was really stuck for a car i could afford to insure. So i brought a 106 off my mate he had sitiing in a garage. I got it recovered to my work, as the rear brakes was gone, which i knew. Next day i drove it and the gearbox was fucked! Then i had bad luck after bad luck with it. We fell out for a bit, but good mates again now and he gave me 200 back.

Did he know the gearbox etc was faulty but sold it to you anyway? or were you just unlucky?

Yes, had a mate (or so I thought) steal some money from me that I lent to him to buy an XR4 (was only 600 quid but this was only a couple of years after I finished uni and that was a fortune to me at the time), and he was also going out for rides on my motorbike when I wasnt around as I was working away from home.
When I confronted him about it he denied it and tried to blame my best mate for it instead, then he got aggressive about me accusing him of it and swung for me, I got out the way of his swing luckily (he was quite a good boxer, county champion in fact, so I suspect it would have hurt had he connected) and so I hit him in self defence, I knew if I gave him the chance he would hit me back, so I just kept on hitting him and hitting him, and was really angry at him swinging for me when it was him in the wrong in the first place not me, its the only time ive ever properly lost my temper in my life, sadly he ended up losing most of his sight as a result, he was in hospital for a while and he needed dozens of stitches and ended up registered blind apparently, cant say he didnt deserve it, but I still feel shit about being responsible for it as away from when I was doing martial arts I normally try and avoid any sort of physical confrontation. my bird at the time visited him in hospital and promptly left me, calling me an animal and saying she couldnt be with someone who could do that to another person.
Thats when I stopped doing martial arts, as I was actually genuinely suprised at how much damage I did to him.
He couldnt press charges as he was out on bail at the time for assualting a couple of coppers, and the theft would have been enough to put him inside, so I got off pretty lucky really as I would have been found guilty of some sort of excessive force crime even though it was self defence initially.
Dark times :(

Im a lot less trusting these days.

wirralphil 15-07-2009 08:49 PM

A so called mate needed to borrow £300 as he was late paying his mortgage, said he would pay me back in 2 weeks. Took me 2 months pestering him, in that time he bought a 2 seater boat, Bmw 3 series and still claimed he was skint. Only got the money back by hooking the boat trailer to my bro's car.

I also got the same "mate" a job, turns out his missus seen me when i was off sick one day and told him, next week i was sacked. Was so close to doing somthin i'd regret.

Money is THE FASTEST way to ruin a friendship.

BAD STORY THIS, but totally true and only recent.

My parents look after a small holiday park and used to keep the weeks taking in their van (insaine!! and have now learnt their lesson).

One night at about 11pm, two tooled up, masked up blokes come in and rob them, my old man (70) nearly died of a heart attack.

BUT, they knew where the safe was and went straight to it, taking 12k??

From info gained later it looks like it was an inside job, and the scum had been given the details of what was where by a guy who used to live and work on the site and was a good friend of my old mans for years. He had fallen out with the owners and moved on.

Don't think he figured my old man would put up a fight, or that he wasn't at the best of health.

SCUM, I dare say one day he may earn that money, it will seem less of an easy job on that day.

james kiely 15-07-2009 09:27 PM

im sure chip when you lent 600 to your mate ,you didnt expect the outcome that unfolded.
sometimes its hard to find out what mates you can depend.

cheers james

Chip 15-07-2009 09:35 PM

James, exactly, people tend to judge others by their own standards IME, so as personally I would always pay back someone if they lent me anything, I assumed that he would too.

I leant £3000 to a "mate" never to hear from him again, and he appeared to disappear off the face of the planet.

Turned out he'd bought a house in France and had been gradually sorting the move out over the course of a few months, and had "borrowed" cash off quite a few people, so no doubt had a nice few quid spending money stashed away to help him out over there!

Dan F 15-07-2009 10:15 PM

Im in a situation at the minute!

I was going somewhere for my birthday then my 'mate' asked if he paid towards petrol could he come along, so i said yeah

A couple of weeks later Im still waiting for petrol money:wall:
I feel stupid for not getting the money up front

RS Grant 15-07-2009 11:39 PM

This is a very recent story. Guy's actually a member on here, the story also drags on a bit, so bear with me.

I had an Escort as a dog/runaround car and was planning to throw on a GTi kit, lower it and fit a set of 16" alloys.

Local guy had a set of 16" Mondeo 5 spokes for sale which were in need of a refurb, but were pretty cheap and this 'mate' of mine didn't have wonga to buy them so asked if I wanted them for my car instead and that he'd just move over and let them go... I told him that I'd take them and to tell the guy to text me, which he agreed to do. Anyway, next thing is that I hear from someone else, that this 'mate' has gone and bought the wheels for his Escort van.. wasn't a huge fan of that fact, but end of the day we got over it and I told him that he should have had the bollox to tell me himself and that mates dont just fuck off plans and arrangements to make sure they're alright.

Moving forward about 3 months, one of my pals offered me a set of brand new lowering springs for it who had them sitting in a shed doing nothing since he sold his MK6 Escort ages back.

He told me that he paid 80-90quid for them but that he'd haggle backwards from 20note for them since they were in the way and I wasn't keen on spending much/any money on this runaround, brilliant... ended up agreeing on 15quid, they were dropped at mine while I was out... and sat there for the duration of the time I was using the Escort.

I've since bought a Mondeo ST200 as a replacement for the Escort, while its hardly a minted status symbol, its not quite as council as the Escort looked... anyway, I had these springs sitting doing nothing in the garage, now no use to me.

My 'mate' had since bought a MK6 Cabrio that he was doing up for an MOT and asked if I was selling those springs (he knew exactly what I paid for them). I told him that cause I currently don't have a job, I was gonna fling them on the net/ebay etc and get reasonable money for them.. probably get around 50quid delivered for them which would come in handy at this time.

A small time later he asked again and I said that if he wanted them, then he could have them for 30quid... I reminded him that its more than I paid, but defo less than I could get advertising them on the internet.

He agreed to 30quid & fitted springs. Bought GTi skirts/spats, bought Cossie alloys for £200, got car MOT'd Tax'd and insured....

Next few weeks, he dodges calls, makes excuses about no money etc etc... then tells me that cause I only paid 15quid for them, he's only going to give me 15quid for them despite me reminding him that we agreed 30quid and he knew what I paid in the first place. In addition to this, quite a few people have let me know that he's been telling people that I've been trying to rip him off.. other friends who know that I'm not like that, but other people who dont know me so well that might believe the bullshit.

By this point, I'm fucking raging and tell him that I want my trolley jack (only thing he's got of mine) back and a word... told him that I'd come see him and he's started to dodge calls, make excuses, etc. I've always believed that you should never lift your hands to someone you once called a friend but this spineless wanker is really pushing his luck now that he's trying to tell people that I ripped him off. If it continues then he'll leave me no other option.

I'll happily name and shame the twat too, his username on here is scottyd, be careful if you deal with him selling you bits or he contacts you.. he's got champagne eyes and dr pepper pockets. Just ask the guys on jdm-yo, civicsportsclub and hondatech... he's a con artist cunt.

Cheers,
Grant

Recently decided to set up a small mobile disco buisness with a very good mate - one of my best mates in fact. He was absolutely up for it and we both decided to stick 500 quid in it and decided when etc. Came to the time to stick the money in, i stuck my money in first and bought a load of equipment, sent him receipts what i spent etc etc. Then it was time to put his money in....he kept saying he didnt have the money even tho i know he was loaded as going out every night etc etc. I eventually managed to get 140 quid out of him and he was very reluctant. After waititng another month asked him when he was gonna put the rest of the money in and he started moaning saying we didnt have any gigs etc etc.I told him how could we get gigs when he still hadnt put his money in and we still never had all the equipment. He then said he wanted his 140 quid back and he couldn be bothered with it all!!! Even though id spent 500 quid of my money on it already. So now, i got to give him 140 quid back (which i got a good mind not too) and somehow either sell the stuff i got at a loss or go ahead and do it all myself. Well cheesed off with it all. Had contracts ready to sign and everything which i wasnt gonna let him sign until he handed his half of the money over.

Big fat Scotty Dickson from tayport used to have a green civic???

dojj 16-07-2009 08:45 AM

where to start?

not exactly ripped off but here are 2 tales of "mates"

about 20 years ago i went round to my mates house after finishing work and he came to the door in a bt of a state, turns out that someone had just robbed his house and he was waiting for the cops to turn up
scroll forward a few weeks and we were out in the car and the next thing i know, he's got a knife to my throat saying that i'd robbed his house!!!!!!!!!!!
he was threatening all sorts and there i was, driving along thinking "if he cuts me i'm driving straight into that lampost"
i couldn't BEGIN to tell you the shit we got up to as kids without getting locked up for posting it but it was like we were brothers, our folks got on with each other and all sorts
we never spoke again but there was blood spilt that afternoon

a few years later, i was off to pick the old man up and, as i stopped a junction, a bloke i'd known in a round about sort of way tapped on he window and i ended up giving him a lift as he was headed in that direction

14 hours later, after having shuttled about 20 different blokes here there and everywhere i got home

no fucker gets a lift off me now

Aye, we were good mates, so I thought... but the guys just out for himself and takes whatever he can and doesn't mind if he screws everyone else in the process. I dont put up with people like that in my life and I warned him about that when the thing with the 16" wheels happened, but like I said, he obviously doesn't know how to be a proper mate so he can fuck off once I get my trolley jack back.

A "mate" of mine got together a groupbuy from specclutch for fmcn.no, a norwegian ford forum. He collected £300 from 15 people or something and then he just vanished.

I have tried every possible way to get through on the phone, called his family, friends etc. but it all leads into thin air.

Next step is to visit him at home, and strangle him to death for being a dick..

i got knocked on here for £40 for some quadlamps

but for the spring deal i think if he sold em to you for £15 you either dont have em no more and ebay em or let him have em for cost, for hioms to lose on selling em cheap to you then to pay you more again is unfair i think (whatever was agreed its still gonna bite having to do that)

i know you disagree but for £15 i'd have done him a favor and delt back at 15 or just put em on ebay and not been able to find em next time he asked

i dont do deals with anybody i know for profit, ill let em have stuff for cost or ill sell elsewhee if its a biggie

i have a mk6 fiesta i want 2 grand for atm (still boks for 3.5 with less bumps) and loads of people i know want it but they know it owes me less and that if even a bulb goes ill get a guilt trip

if it dont sell ill give it to my mum with signs in the windows to run till it does

Yea, but everyone's entitled to their opinion... if I'd not needed the cash money (30quid is a lot for a student.. ) and had a job at the time then I'd have given them to him for cost but I'd planned to get 50note for them on eBay and thought I'd do him a favor (which he was happy with) and sell them for 30quid to put the cash towards other things.

Like I said, everyones entitled to their opinion and many would react differently in the same situation. ;-)

Craig, I'll fire over my number in a minute mate. :top:

ive been ripped off massively by a so called best mate in the last few weeks. Well pissed off tbh about it. Im the one made to feel bad about it all, yet they seem to have no conscience, ie phone calls, popping round the house to sort and then have the audacity to ignore me at ford shows on my stand!!!!!!!

As i said to you on sunday mate ,there out of order . least you have found out he aint a true friend !!

I hope you get this sorted . i had the same problem 3 years ago, i bought 2 gaz coilover kits ,one for my car and one for my mates . he fitted his kit and said he would pay me the money back on the day of our classic ford mag shoot (we done a head to head) he turned up with no money and ive not heard from him since , was £350 too . WONT be doing that again :wall:
