drill size for M3 x 0.5 thread

Default drill size for M3 x 0.5 thread

anyone got any ideas as to what size drill i need to make the hole big enough to tap the thread in?

it's bigger than 2mm but my next size up is 2.5mm and i dn't want it to be too big

help please

Usually the diameter minus the pitch. So 3 - 0.5 = 2.5mm drill for tap.

If it's a soft material I 'd go 2mm to start with, holes always come out slightly nigger than drill size, especially if bit is worn.
Get a copy of ZEUS, this will have all the info you want.

it's going into aluminium and the 2mm hole is too small

thing is though, it's a blind hole so i'm going to have to get a full tap set to get it all the way or else i'll just make the hole 5 or 6mm deeper to take into account the first bit of tame thread
