the blokes bought something to eat as well so the bill looks a bit like this:

vat rate 15%
excl 9.29
vat 1.39
incl 10.68

so i'm not sure if the stuf he's bought to eat was taxable at a different rate or not so i'm just going with the 15% on the fuel at a tenner which is what he put in

so that would make it 8.61 without and 1.39 for the tax giving me a total of a tenner right?

Or you could just take your 10 and divide it by 1.15. Gives you the pre-vat total

his grub cost him 68p

if i take that away from the total excluding tax and then add the total tax it gives me a tenner
Ł9.29 - 68p + Ł1.39 = Ł10.00

I meant that the people dividing by 1.15 could then multiply their answer by 0.15 to get the VAT total Not just get the Cost of the item less VAT

ie

10 divide by 1.15 = 8.70

8.69 x 0.15 + 1.30
