Default Diesel emission MOT failure. Help

Just brought an old ford (1984) with a 2.3 diesel that fails on emissions. It had new air filter, oil filter, and fuel filter. I know nothing about diesels so any tips would be good in pin pointing the problem.
Thanks.

Never tried this method myself, but I've heard of it done.......
Fill the fuel filter with neat injector cleaner, then rag the hell out of it!

Or get some Forte diesel treatment stuff, get down to 1/4 of a tank and throw it in, then cane the bollocks out of it until the fuel light comes on.
