Default Focus ST problem

Looking for a bit of help from any ford tech lads on here
While driving home from work a little earlier the battery light came on my instrument cluster.
Also there is a fairly loud whine noise from under the bonnet.
When i pulled in the my driveway i checked under the bonnet to see if a belt had falling off or something but everything looked ok.
Since i haven't a clue about engines i'm wondering those anyone on here have an idea what the problem is????
Cheers for any help
