Default Driving distance to MOT??

Hi, if i brought a car say 3 hours drive away can i legally book it in for an MOT were i live and drive it the 3 hours home or is there a specified distance your allowed to drive. The car has'nt failed badly but to get it home would cost a lot on a trailor etc. Also if you are allowed to i surpose it would have to be to get to to the garage during opening times or are you allowed to take it to the garage at night to be worked on the next day?
Thanks

i wouldn't see a problem driving a car with no mot when you have just bought it, even if you got done for it its only a small fine not like getting points or that..
i'm sure it doesn't hace to be the closest but 3 hours is miby a bit far!

there is no limit on distance for a MOT test, its your choice where you take it, so why would they put a limit on it?

Pish!

You must take it to the nearest MOT station by the most direct route. It has to be booked in and it should be taxed.

And you're not meant to stop at the shops etc on the way there either...

The DVLA website states;

"Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test:

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.

This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test."

No mention of distance anywhere. I think the only problem you could have would be if you got stopped by the Police and they deemed your vehicle to be majorly unroadworthy for any reason. __________________

You're wrong mate. I worked alongside VOSA for 4 years when I first started in transport. It was even part of my CPC exam.

Nearest Test station
Most direct route
Must be booked in.

I'm not doubting that it hasn't been done loads of times before, so has murder. Doesn't make it right.

That be has to be wrong as if its out of tax you can't retax till it's been MOT'd.

That's the thing, in this case it's what they DON'T say.
I've searched and searched, can't find anything saying nearest.

Mot doesn't void insurance or anything, no big deal really.

I always thought as long as you were driving it straight to the test centre there wasn't any distance limit. However, the police can still do you for driving an unroadworthy car, MOT or not, so give it a good going over before you drive it anywhere!

Where in law is the distance thing? I appreciate your VOSA credentials Smiggy, but that's the first time I've seen it written. Anyone know of anyone being 'done' due to distance?

If you read the rules very very carefully, you should have your MOT test done before or on the expiary date of your current one to make sure.

Because technically you are now driving with no insurance, and if you have an acident or someone nicks your car your stuffed. No way will insurance pay out on it.

And in the future they will have cameras (some places already have them) that automatically read your numberplate and can tell if you have an MOT or insurance, and if you have neither instant fine, and get snapped on enough and the cops come knocking.

Well its a bit of a grey area, remember an insurance company will try and find reasons not to pay out if they can. If they can adequately prove your vehicle was not in a roadworthy condition and you can't prove otherwise with an MOT certificate that may be grounds on not to pay out or to pay you a lesser amount.

Been haveing a look on Direct Gov and can I find anything? No, but did find something under that tax section saying you can drive your car without Tax or an MOT to a pre booked MOT station, but doesn't say anything about distance.

On www.motester.co.uk is states that there is no distance limit. Don't know how official the site is, but it looks like it's run by those in the know.

Yes.....

I got pulled going to the mot station to a pre booked test without tax or mot and the bobby simply checked my insurance and made a quick call to the mot station to check it was booked...... he then thanked me for my cooperation and went on his way happily...

Yep, I sure did! I've never heard any rules about distance, just that it has to be properly booked in for an MOT.
I'm sure that if you were pulled you could get a petty copper on his bad week taking the huff, but what exactly would he charge you with?

Myself and 2 others, who shall remain nameless, got pulled by the fuzz on the way back to brum from liverpool port where we had just taken delivery of 2 nissan skylines. No tax, no MOT, no plates no log book, trade insurance, etc etc etc.

We wrote MOT in the back windows in yellow marker, the cops just wanted to check to see if we had our insurance docs, have a poke around the cars as they quite liked them, and then let us on our merry way.
