As above, was watching a few vids on youtube and just wondered what stage of tune they used to run, would it be something like a stage equivalent??....

Never asked if they used the t3 or not but he did say they were tuned slightly so im guessing they would have the t3 albeit slightly modded to maybe spool faster. Not sure about the mantas but think it would be fair too say they probably wouldnt have 100 bhp more

iirc the early group a cars had something like a 45 mm restictor, not the peasly 34mm we run today, the actual figures would have been more like 350hp.

red would do almost anything to get jimmy or colin to win a event, even if it ment fuckin around with the boost, illegal servicing.
in the old days john goff sat in r.e.d's tranny on the event rebuilding the boxes as the cars went through them so quick.
they also used to run colin in a group n car in the group a with just a big group a diff fitted to get it in.
he still won like in group n+ cars.

i was told the group a cars were well over 300 but under 400 btw.

rally engineering development the sierra cosworth specialists + jimmy mcrae

Got an article on the 1988 Corsica winning car here.
Cozzfather is right, Terry Hoyle built the engine in partnership with Graham Dale Jones from Boreham.
Ford Motorsport's John Wheeler reckoned that the standard turbo and intercooler limited power to around 308-315bhp but torque is over 300lb ft from 3500 > 5500 rpm
Getrag 5-speed box 4.89 rear end with viscous diff
Bilstein dampers set at front 325/150 with 500lb springs and rear 260/110 with 200lb springs
AP brakes 12.9 in front
11.2 in rear
Weight in Corsica trim 1106kg

Tested on a wet Boreham track by John Wheeler on Michelin slicks
0-30 2.4
0-60 4.8
0-100 10.8

Max 115mph @ 7500rpm in 5th

back in the early days of group a the turbo cars were running a 38mm restrictor over the 34mm

i would say they were around 360hp if on the bigger restrictor, i know the escorts were running this sort of power when on the big restrictor !

the torque would have been abit higher than the power, around 390 in the escorts, dont know about the 3doors

Manta's were N/A so nowhere near that. I've got videos of Jimmy driving 3 doors on the Manx and the car does look like a handful and very well driven, I'd also doubt the quoted 300bhp figures but he was properly on it and a commited driver on tarmac.

Good thread

I think the Mantas were up at about 275-285bhp at the end of their run - much less torquey than the Cosworth but 2.4 litre naturally aspirated

Cosworth designed 16 valve head and Opel Rekord diesel bottom end
