Axolotl - Mexican Walking Fish
Has anyone ever had any, and got any advice on keeping them ?. ive just got a couple as ive always found them interesting, i know the basics, and have read up on them on the net. very strange looking things, there actually a salamander, and can under some circumstances, undergo metamorphosis from neotenic into terrestrial form if you slowly lower the water level so they can get out of the water, then the gills can close up, altough this quite rare and will shorten its life span, and i dont plan on doing this anyway, just find it interesting.

I had two , when i was a bout 12 , fucking long time agolol.
They where quite boring , just looked cool at the time.
If you slowly reduce the water level and give them a bank to walk up they come out of the water , quite cool imo

They are cool clive, thats why ive always fancied some mate. the only problem im having, there perfect tank temperature is 16c-20c, and should never be above 24c, well ive took my heater out and done a 25% water change with cold water before i put them in, and my tank at room temperature has settled around 23c, with is 1c below the maximum. as far as them being boring, ive got a big piranha tank fella, they cant be anymore boring than them lol.

I like them Fiddy Ive always wanted one of these since i was a kid & used to keep snakes. I did read that feeding them thyroid extract will make them mature quicker so they can live out of water.

Spot on ginge, they are missing the thyroid that turns them into salamanders, hence why they stay how they do, you can inject it to change them apparently, and it can happen naturally if they stay of the water enough and the gills close up, but its very rare for it to happen, shortens there life span, and stresses them out.
