split charging.... how can i do it???
now that winter is here... my recovery truck needs a little help in the morning to start.... and i want to fit two batterys, anyone no how to make a split charging system>>>> i know i need a bigger alternator... any help ... pleaseeeeeeeeeee

Depends how complicated you want it. You could have a simple relay or a full on electronic controled effort at 2 grand from Antares or Adverc.
Plus a split charge won't help it start, it will only help by running any auxilliary electrical items off that second battery like beacon and work lamps, stopping you flattening your cranking battery..
A simple way of doubling the amps up on your starting battery is fit a second battery and connect the positive onto the positive of the origional battery and the negative to the engine block. This will double the cranking amps and will be constantly charged by the alternator. Ford used to fit this on Transits as a special vehicle option for things like ambulances etc...

cool... also, whats the cheapest way of getting a bigger alternator... ie what car comes with say a 100 amp alternator... btw its going on a 1980 vw lt35 2.0 petrol... thanks daz!

A later LT might have a higher amp alternator or you may be able to get you alternator uprated.
I know Sprinters now come with an optional 200 amp alternator from new....
