Default Nearly toasted my cossie last nite GULP

I was out setting the boost on actuator and getting to know the car again last night, checking for fluid leaks if any and generally enjoyin a drive for half hour when the exhaust started popping like an over fuelled RS turbo and the car filled with oily smoke and i couldnt see a thing, i pulled over and popped the bonnet as I jumped out there was a plume of smoke all down the lane, I lifted the bonnet expecting to find flames licking away round the bay, smoke was that bad!!!!!!! But no flames, instead i had a roasting hot exhaust and turbo manifold bubbling away with oil covering most of the hot side of the engine, I was just waiting for it to errupt but was able to let it cool down.
This was at 20:30 I called the AA who sent out local firm Harry Dolman recovery, christ they are crap! he told me my car was too low to be recovered and I should drive up the road and sit in a driveway till the AA send their own guy, TWAT! I said I would take my bumper off and I would drive it up, not worried about the bodywork scuffing, he refused, saying "its not policy, I`m liable for any damage you know, it dont work like that" I said again I would take the bumper off again, no problem, just get me home, he refused, so I waited for the AA who sent a lower flat bed, bit of scraping on the way off but not fussed. Anybody who has seen my cars bodywork will understand I got home at 22:00hrs pissed off and tired.
It seems the turbo either spat its dummy out big time??? but it still made good boost, or the sump return pipe is leaking as oil is settled in the trough in the ex manifold, I will investigate this weekend. Close call though, really thought it was burnt toast

eh up magic randy, small world mate yeah that rusty heap is mine, what you driving? I may recognise it? Is the Leicester cruise still on, not been in months, been Loughboro one though.
Phil; the brakes worked spot on, never pulled up so quick in all my life!! I have tried them from 120-60mph too with no fade just noisey
mattbibs; Recovery recommended, i used the AA recovery 6 times one year... cost Ł70, got pulled out of a ditch one night... cost Ł100

Gonna have a look under the bonnet again as soon as I get 5 min in the light, winter nights suck for working on cars, update soon...

i stopped at the lights tonight coming home and i just noticed smoke coming up from under the bonnet then smoke entering the car so i quickly reversed and parked up, engine off...

looked under the car first to make sure there was no flames before i opened the bonnet and there was none. Couldn't find ant oil leaks or oil on the manifold/turbo etc.. left it a minute, reversed it, checked pavement no oil on the pavement so i thought fair do's.. started up and drove home no probs!

Dunno what it is but i'm thinking maybe due to having the standard engine breathing and knwoing that my crank breather has a slit on the rubber next to the turbo then maybe the pressure was too high and oil started spewing onto the turb or something? or maybe it was just smoke from the turbo as i have no exhaust/downpipe etc.

Anyway, it is scary hope yours is alright mate

I had a look tonight after work, looked at the turbo side thinking that was the problem only to find oil leaked out of the bottom of the turbo and all over the exhaust downpipe, I took a look round the inlet side and sure enough that too is covered in oil, I checked the dipstick and the sump is empty. I took a look underneath and I must have a couple of litres of Mobil1 Msport over every part of the engine from the turbo back both above and below, the gearbox, exhaust, Anti roll bar, floor etc I have never seen anything like it.

I check my breather catch tank and... empty, seems the standard breather isnt working at all and oil has been forced through pretty much every seal on the engine, Graham Goodes letting me down with the GpA breather system may have cost me dearly, not sure on the damage it could have caused, anybody know? Im thinking every seal purged has to be the worst thing

And the clean up if I even bother will take soo long, what to use? such a mess I have to get the breather kit fitted now before I drive it again and i wanted it running for winter time, bit gutted really, just glad it never went up in flames... i think???

At least there is no way it will bloody rust any further under there with that much lube on the engine bay

I took a trip to Goodes this afternoon and saw Josh to chat about breather systems for the cossie, I returned home with a 3port GpA breather system and most of the fittings, superb.

I took a look at fitting the little beauty tonight and sat there laughing out loud as when I went to remove the bolt from the exhaust side of the block I couldnt find it... Its only vibrated loose and fell out?!?!?!? so relieved really, i now at least know what has caused the mass of oil leaking out onto the exhaust and turbo, a missing block bolt, glad the seals are fine then, phew!

magic randy; I park it over the road for now while the parking bays are being tarmacced, stop by sometime if you spot me, say hi Rx 7 should handle sweet, would have one to replace the cossie. And as for old diesel porkpie round about, got to love it, bit close to home for me though, neighbours and all
