Default S1 RS Turbo Re-Bore???? PLEASE HELP!!!

FIRSTLY, THIS POST IS NOT INTENDED TO STIR UP ANY MORE NEGATIVE REACTION TOWARDS ENGINE ADVANTAGES.

I am posting this because I know many of you know Ford's inside out and I respect and value your opinions.

My S1 was at Engine Advantages today for a tune up:

This is the supposed spec:

Engine rebuild 300 miles ago, still being run in.
Rebuild consisting of;
165/170bhp Chip
Recon bottom end,
New pistons & rings
Valves & valve stem oil seals
Skimmed head
Uprated head
Polished and ported
New Tappets
Cometic Head Gaskets
Full Magnex exhaust from turbo
SFS silicone hoses
Uprated intercooler
Competition GFB Dump Valve
Bailey Header Tank & Oil seperater & loads of Chrome in engine bay

It was running very rough when I picked it up last Thursday night so I booked it in for a tune up today.

Anyway, Paul phoned me at about 11:00am with some bad news for me.

Basically, he said *my cylinders are full of oil and that the bores are worn. Using a borescope he could see a step on the bores where the pistons have worn them away*.

*I know nothing about engines, the above is what I think he said, if it wasn't or if it doesn't make sense it is 100% my fault.

He informed me the car would need re-boring, his quote for the work was £1500 (I don't know if this included the VAT).

I now don't know what to do, would I do better to get a recon. engine from Specialised or something? Or is there any alternative solution?

I e-mailed Specialised, SCC and Burton asking for their advice.

Any advice, opinions and solutions appreciated gentlemen.

Please bare it in mind that I have the mechanical ability of a haddock!!

Thank you for your time.

Oh by the way Paul didn't charge me a penny, which was nice of him.

AS Justin says who rebuilt it ? If these deffects were ther before rebuild they should have been picked up.
If New pistons have been fitted were they 0.5mm oversized or std if oversized then the bore would have been machined to fit and therfore bore should be perfect

Some BMW technician. The previous owner had it done on the cheap.

Who else would you recommend to look at it?

DO NOT go to specialised engines.... They are really just specialists in Talking crap and avoiding issues in hand.... I will be starting a thread on them myself soon

Not sure if all of these people do CVH rebuilds so forgive me if not, just know they have good reps.
Motorsport Development
Karl Norris
Grove garage
Burtons

Like I say some of them may not build engines but its worth asking, also ask around and get others opinions as you are on this post.
We can build the engine for you but we are still new and have no real rep as such to speak of. We are currently rebuildin 2 mk2 XRT conversions and not so long ago rebuilt my own 190 bhp S2 and a friends pretty std FRST.
If you would like a quote please PM me or call

Also you may need a new block depending on how bad the step is and whether its been rebored previously.

Cheers
Jay

TBH... and this is with greatest respect to XFactor, maybe even puts your mind at rest, Rebiulding a std CVH bottom end as pretty straight forward... someone who has competently done a couple should be fine

Yep not a complicated build at all, as long as things are done properly with good components and in a clean environment you should not have any problems

I'm pretty sure the smoke's not blue at all! Odd!

I have contacted the previous owner, he said that he thought the BMW guy would've done it.

Maybe I need a second opinion.

Who?

I'd get a second opinion. Oil smoke usually has a very distinctive smell to it also.
You never know could just be a head gasket or some thing silly like that.

Mate, you were sold the car advertised as having a freshly rebuilt engine which it seems it does not have. I'd get onto the guy you bought it from for some money!!

There are a few things you can look at your self too. Deffo get a second opionion for one.
But is she getting hot?
Any mayo on the filler cap?
Any shite in the expansion tank?
Possible mis fire when starting from cold or indeed a miss fire any time?

just my 2p's worth, get a second opinion 100% and try not to admit you have no mechanical knowledge as people will be inclined to tuck you up even further!!

also, you have absolutly no chance of any money back from the guy you bought it from , I dont know why people are saying contact the previous owner , it has nothing to do with him , you bought the car as seen you should have taken someone with you who knows how to spot these things .

good luck matey

Not really.

No

Haven't checked.

Have had a few misfires.

Seems to be losing pressure all the time whilst driving.

Although I did boot on the way home last night as I was so pissed off, probably not the best idea but I did it anyway, it was boosting up fine and accelerating well.

I don't tell garages I know nothing about cars, I just nod at the right times and pretend I know what they're going on about. I admit my lack of knowledge on here as I trust you guys.

I didn't expect to get anything back from the seller, it was sold as seen. I think I was just unlucky, at the time I viewed it, it ran okay and drove well. I don't know what could've happened between then and when I picked it up. I have no luck with cars

I could do with some good luck mate.

Where shall I take it then?

bring it down to me matey
i,l strip it , check it and tell you if theres anything wrong with it , if it all checks out ok i,l put it back together for you which will leave it for you to get the ecu checked etc . most people with a half decent knowledge of engines can tell if things like that are fooked . just give me good drink for doing it

it would give me a good excuse to get out the house
