Default road tax gap

finally taxed the van today but the lady in the post office said that as there had been a gap in the tax (vehicle wasn't sorn when i got it) i needed to go to the local dvla office to sort it.

she still gave me a tax disc though, so what does this mean?

My brother had the same thing, they told him he needed to inform the DVLA office.

..he never did and nothing ever happened.

i just had an £80 fine for this but if i payd it within 14 days it would only be £40????

the car was sorn when i bought it, but because of a name change on the log book i had to re do the sorn, which i didnt, so i suppose it was my fault.
