Default noob on the prowl

hey guys, welshphill here, but you can call me welshy..

i'm all brand new to this site and will, be looking for info, parts and advice on a sapphire cossie 4x4 i just picked up..

let me tell you about myself, i'm 44 (just) live in the french alps (cheap hoilday anyone???)and the proud owner of two 3 door mk1 sierra's...

they're both 2.0is, one black one and one white one (what can i say i'm a sucker for 3 door sierra's!!!)

and in a fit of cheapness (1000€) i just added this cossie 4x4 to the fleet

the reason she was sooo cheap is that it's gotta fist size hole in the block and i'll be picking your brains, asking advice and generally being a nuisance till she's ticking over...

but more of that later, i just wanted to say hello and tell you a bit about myself.

btw, i'm a regular on fsoc amonst other sites i loiter around on...

that depends on weather it's winter or summer?? summer i can do a great self catering deal...

if you fancy bringing your car, we got some of the best (twisty as fook) roads (hardly a speed camera around) in europe...

as well i have been trying to organise a track day here in france. i can be used as a base or i got a mate that lives near magna cours and a smaller local track, camping, self catered, cheap as it can be...

anyone fancy???

Welcome Phil - interesting Sierras - the 2.0is was a 5 door over here wasn't it?

Looks nice scenery out there - drove my Sapphire all the way to South of France and back a few years ago - fantastic roads!

thanks for the greetings and the info, i'd be real glad to get to know/meet anyone who can give me advise, help, parts...

i've built quite a few cars and am confident with building engines but i'd like a bit of help with sourcing parts and esp knowing the insider tips n tricks, short cuts and getting to know what parts work best and how/where to find them...

lhd220, now that's what i'm talking about!!! cheers fella...

i know all about site bitching, i'm in a few ford/sierra sites and a couple of bike sites too...

i'm not gonna get into the sapph vs hatchbacks or mk1 against mk2, i've even seen on here, the black 3drs vs the blue 3drs!!! i mean cum on...

but all's good in my world, normally i do side and am a staunch advocate on the hatch v sapph, but since i just bought a sapph, so i'm of the 'peace an love to my brother' mood set at the mo...

Welcome to PF

1st thing. yu need a new block :P and they aint cheap at the moment as your 4x4 would have had the 200 block.. the 205 blocks not as strong but still good power gains if your not wanting to go mental on the power side of things. get it stripped then find out what piston sizes you have! might have been over bored before 0.25 ect. same for the crank..that way at least you know where to start from.. come on get the spanners out and start taking it apart plenty of people here to help out

thanks, i'm of the thought that i'll just 205 it for the now as..

A- i've got a really good 205 block that i know is mint

B- i've never had a cosworth or driven a yb engine before (been a happy sierra 20L injection pinto driver/owner for years) and i think that even a standard bhp cossie is gonna be a shite load of fun after 115bhp

C- it'll give me more time (and be able to save some more beer tokens) to find a blinder of a block

D- it's summer and the time is now for riding around in me new cossie

yup good idea but remember sometimes you need deep pockets you may have a nice 205 sitting there then find out the pistons wont fit if your old engine has had an overbore ect then its started allready looking for the pistons that will fit but dont ever be put off, took me 2 years to sort mine and sooooooo glad its done, running in now with 380 miles on the clock. your 115bhp lol you will bloody love it when its done mate!

205 block will be fine, personally if you are using the car in the mountains and on lots of twistys then you want no lag in the turbo

so i would go for a completely stock motor with standard compression, keep the t3 turbo and go for a set of green or siemen blacks 55lb injectors, 3 map bar sensor, rs500 style intercooler (4x4 intercooler will probably be OK, but if you get hot weather, you want a 500 one), decent breather system (Bailey will be OK), decent exhaust and rewire the fuel pump for a direct feed from the battery (a must for all cossies!)

thanks that just the type of advice i'm looking for...

i got a budet of two grand but i don't want to chuck it all at the engine, i'm after some other goodies too!!!

i know my pinto is standard bore and very low milage, do you think a set of 2nd hand pistons (with new rings) and rods (with new shells and small end) would be ok???

or am i better getting it bored to match a set of new pistons??

bearing in mind i just want to get her on't road and can source and build a better short motor as i drive, so to speak...

personally speaking, if i was building an engine, i wouldnt piss about with 2nd hand pistons, i would just buy new. do it right first time round.

assuming all of your other bits are OK, you should be able to build the motor with a new set of pistons inc. machining for £1500 if you do the work yourself.

which would leave you £500 for the go faster bits, which if you keep the t3 should see you get 310-320hp

Matt
